Five Points, East End Market, & Raleigh Iron Works

Well, industrial infill redevelopment has been a long-held dream for quite some time. There is finally a confluence of conditions to make it happen.

Time will tell when there be a corresponding re-working and densification of those early urban ring residential neighborhoods.

Leo (@dtraleigh), any consideration for making the East End Market the title of this thread or a new dedicated thread? Given the PD rezoning request and official name of this project, seems logical unless you’d prefer wait until there’s actual ground broken?

Is the person who started the thread allowed to just do that, unilaterally?

'cuz that person is me, and I did that.

Now changing it from Iron Works is going to confuse me but this corridor along Whitaker to Atlantic keeps me excited and should have it’s own thread from Five Points.

I believe work began. They are currently removing all the trees in the parcels between wake Forest Rd and progress court.

Thanks! I live on Mills st so that development is going to happen under my windows!
Here is a view of the site from the end of progress court / back of the small apartment complex on Mills.

Another view from wake Forest Rd. I guess all those rental houses are probably in their final days.

I noticed the clearing today when I was driving south on Wake Forest Rd to return home from lunch at Chuy’s.

Holy moly. That’s quite a significant project for that site.

Awesome! I mean, awesome if you are ok with a huge project outside your windows, lol. You have certainly found the group that will be super interested in what is going outside your windows!! Thanks for the pics @Vic!!

I think it’s exciting. The construction noise will definitely not be fun, especially with the work from home situation…
On a general note, I prefer a development like that, where it’s bringing new amenities at walking distance as well as more high density housing than what the home builders are doing in Hi-Mount, just on the other side of wake Forest Rd where they tear down single family ranch to replace it with bigger and more expensive single family house…

what are all of the uses of that project? How much is housing? How much is retail? etc…

Glad you asked. I couldn’t find much about it online.

Last I remember, Phase 1 (bldgs 1 & 2) is all retail/office. Other buildings were not set in stone, but generally seemed like retail at ground floor spaces of bldgs 3, 4, and 6.

The tenant of the long warehouse (building I in the map) moved out today. Hopefully that means that the reno of East End Market will start soon

Walked by this afternoon and they’ve started clearing out that whole area. Looks super weird to see that space empty behind the existing townhouses.

Kind of a extension of 5 Points to North Hills & Duke Raleigh Hospital area.

Love the guy who doesn’t live here but owns one crappy building complaining…my bet is the City could care less about his opinion.

I’m surprised they gave the guy that much space in the article.

In other news in that area, I was disappointed to see the site review plans pop up for the open land at the intersection of Six Forks and Atlantic. https://cityofraleigh0drupal.blob.core.usgovcloudapi.net/drupal-prod/COR15/ASR-0073-2020.pdf

I was hoping that the Sears building redevelop would spur a similar development on that parcel. It seems like a wasted opportunity based on the future use plan and adjacent to what was projected as a light rail station.

What a joke of a news story. Of course the only interview they could get was the NIMBY. You have to hope that city leaders weigh the long term benefit to society much heavier than the financial position of one noisy resident.

Anyways the proposal looks incredible

Exactly we have to keep Raleigh moving forward and not give these Nimbys a inch, that area is long long overdue for improvements and redevelopment.
