I keep coming back to the lack of non-car connectivity in the greater area as titled on the thread + Mordecai/Lions Park/Glascock etc is truly something that needs to be addressed. Interconnecting greenways, wide sidewalks and some way to get across capital via tunnel or pedestrian/bike bridge would eliminate a ton of car travel that is not really necessary if these things were in place. I think the City has some things planned, but not sure how comprehensive it is.
When watching the video, I immediately started asking myself how the faults of Minneapolis compare to Raleigh. If we think of the newly designated social district, it does have benches to sit on. It does have more pedestrian priority and narrower streets. It does have the little plazas off Fayetteville for a quick smoke. It also isn’t filled with chain establishments.
For the most part, Glenwood South follows a similar pattern but could use wider sidewalks at the expense of street parking in my opinion so that it too could have more benches for folks to sit, have a smoke, etc.
The Warehouse District, with its continuing revitalization is putting the building blocks in place too with wider sidewalks, the public plaza to sit by RUS, etc., and Bloc 83 has its own little public plaza to sit and just chill.
Smoky Hollow has the “holler” with similar aspects to Bloc 83, and both spaces will be really cool for hanging out when the storefronts that face them are occupied.
Slide is already there, and the Jaguar Bolera is going to go in the apartment building they’re currently working on. The slide is just a part of the development, not for any one specific retail space.
Me thinks that somebody was snooping around Johnson Street and “borrowed” that idea. JSYC has Christmas lights wrapping theirs though, which is a high class differentiator.
They need to work on making better beer before they work on a fancy new space. I wish them well and have a soft spot for them, but most of their beer is not of the quality this area expects these days. Hard truth.
Too each their own I suppose. I’ve never had a problem with their beer. Always been kind of partial to their bad penny one and some of their seasonal ones too. Can’t believe I’m seeing their pumpkin beer already on shelves currently in august.
Either way, there’s all sorts of awesome breweries across the state of NC if Kane wanted to target one. They got a Charlotte-based bbq place for SH and a Winston-Salem area sports bar for the NH expansion so I’m sure they could do something similar here.
I’m hoping they choose to be a Downtown South brewery. There was some mention/hint in the past of a possible ‘Phase 0’ with a brewery. The warehouse along S Saunders would work IMO. I think they have a good style that will fit the scene and in good company with Trophy and soon to be Riparian Brewing (Pelagic sister company) that will create a little brewery hopping action for the south side.
I hate agreeing with you on this, but yeah. I’ve had a couple rotating drafts from Big Boss that I really dig, but most of the stuff they actually distribute is pretty meh. I feel the same way about Lonerider.
Bums me out that two of our most well-known and widely-distributed breweries are also two of our least exciting ones. I think of Raleigh as a great city for craft beer, but outsiders aren’t going to feel that way when most of the stuff that makes it out of the Triangle region isn’t nearly as good as the stuff coming out of Asheville and (winces) Charlotte.
Edit: I credit Allagash, which is probably my all-time favorite brewery (heavy bias since I’m from Maine), for sparking the craft beer surge in Portland. They’ve been around since 1995 and consistently put out exceptional beers, so there was a natural draw when craft beer really started picking up 10-15 years ago. Now I talk to brewers and they say things like “ah man, I’ve been wanting to visit Portland so bad” to check out Bissell or Oxbow or Maine Beer Co or whatever. I truly believe that Allagash played a key role in that reputation, because they’re the most widely-distributed brewery in the state: when people think of Maine beer, they think of quality. Big Boss and Lonerider both have the distribution to build that same reputation for Raleigh, but they need to step their game up.
Hmm - I know that taste if very individual, but I really enjoy a couple of Loneriders beers - Shotgun Betty is one of our favorite Heff’s. I certainly have had worse NC beers, lol. When I’ve bought Big Boss, I do agree that they were ok and nothing that I would seek out. But tastes . . . I for one detest IPAs, lol. Give me a sour, heffe, nut brown or Belgian white any day. Umm - 12:30 here, is it too early to start drinking?
