Future of Glenwood South

I worked with him when he managed one of the Charlotte locations  he was super cool, can’t believe he’s gone.

I saw a few more details on ABC11 today. They caught the guy that did it. Apparently they were in an altercation near Midwood around 2am, the suspect punched the victim who fell and hit his head. Still would like to know more about this sad and disturbing incident.

Here’s the WRAL story.

Just walked out of the building to see how the Glenwood closure is affecting the neighborhood, and just as expected, the traffic is all being pushed to Boylan where most residents access their homes. It’s a shit show for residents…and it’s not even 11PM yet.

You should move somewhere quieter. Like Miami. Or Chatham County.

Let me get out my tiny violin.

Need a passport for Chatham. Wake county peeps are sketchy.

Ton more arrests this weekend for guns/drugs. Looks like most of the arrests were a block or so off off Glenwood. Keep flushing these thugs further and further away.

More will come, we need to make this street and the entire district more visible with: more streetlights; wider sidewalks; less strict permitting for street festivals; and of course more housing.

Short term solutions are increased police presence (via cameras, unmarked cars, etc.) and weekend closures for Glenwood South. The more eyes you have on the street, the better and safer it will be.

@anon8787296 How are the pedestrian street talks going with your peers? I have a few documents they should look into if they have any objections.

At what hour are these arrests happening? The things that @trueurbanist notes are good and fine and should happen, but if the crime is happening at 2 am then I’m not sure more housing/wider sidewalks/streetlights will really matter. And where do you want to flush these people to? There must be a reason the crime is happening in that area - demand for the drugs or whatever it is that is driving the crime.

Glenwood South isn’t some drug market like skid row. People aren’t bringing guns with them because of a pot dealer at Armadillo Grill.

I wonder if there were other places some of the folks who are causing problems used to hang out that were shut down, and now they have nowhere to go.

There’s also zero reason 16 year old teenagers should be just standing around Glenwood street corners at 1am. Did the malls flush them out?

They are happening anywhere from 10:30pm-3:00am

Take a look at the arrests by Raleigh Police on these 2 nights/mornings. Almost all of the arrests for possession of drugs and carrying concealed/firearm by felon by Raleigh Police during these timeframes are in the Glenwood South area

This is definitely being reflected in the crime data.

More police means more crime is reported, i wonder if this is the case here. This is why global crime statistics are unreliable because different places under or over report issues.

Considering we are only 2/3 of the way thru the year, these numbers are really going to be eye opening by the end of the year

Really good point, @Francisco. I’d love to see a comparison of a data point that reflects a metric around police patrols, or whatever metric makes sense in this context. I expect it’s fairly linear, and suggests perhaps more success with more patrols.

I’d also like to ā€œweed outā€ marijuana busts (pun very much intended) out of these numbers to better understand an actual drug problem. Not trying to get political here, but I’m not interested in people being busted for smoking pot off Glenwood at midnight.

Maybe when considering the drug and weapons violations, but not the assault and larceny charges. Those are usually incident based and charged after the fact.

I think this is exactly right. This shows reported crime, not actual. If they are ramping up police presence, I would think it leads to more incidents. I’m not aware of a better way but I like what you suggest @OakCityDylan, if we knew how many officers were out and at what times, this could be correlated.

So maybe the question is sort of what I already asked - what is bringing a felon who carries a firearm to Glenwood South?

We can keep arresting people but what’s bringing them to the area if not drugs? Is it some of the establishments and the clientele they attract?
