Do you feel this way all the time? Like even on a Saturday during the day or at 6 or 7? Or during the week? Just curious. TBH at this point I typically only go to Glenwood South for Cortez or Plates and I’m home before the crime starts.
Was in the area last night. I haven’t been for a bit, but I really don’t know why (or at least on this block). It’s probably because I normally go to breweries and less at bars. I was kind of surprised by how the street felt dead. This was about 10:30.
It was nice to be able to walk in the street and have a bit of space. I’ll admit that I’m not sure if this section was actually closed, but there was no traffic. I’m assuming it gets busier later? It just seemed to be dead. Maybe people were in the bars too. Milk Bar seemed to be busy. Pine State wasn’t.
On a separate note, Smoky Hollow was busy. Granted this was at 8:30. I’m sure First Friday had a huge part of it being busy as well.
NC State is on fall break which is probably part of the reason it was dead at that time.
Having Fall break in October seems odd.
Its mid term for a lot of places. Hard to believe the semester is half gone.
Fall break probably has something to do with it, but peak crowdedness is probably around midnight-1am in my experience.
I really like having the street (somewhat) closed off to cars but it’s definitely kind of in an “in between” state right now. I feel like a lot of folks still stay on the sidewalks because it’s not entirely clear which sections have traffic blocked off and from which directions, it’s inconsistent throughout the street.
Would be weirder in February…
Wait - When is fall break NOT in October…?
10:30 is EARLY for Friday and Saturday nights.
When else would you have fall break? November i guess? But exams are over and Christmas break starts early December.
Side note, with as much police presence and as many gun/drug charges recently, some people have some huge cajones to still be bringing that stuff around there now. I’m more concerned about when things calm down and police presence subsides.
BU (Boston University) doesn’t have a fall break in October so that why I was confused. Plus I was an athlete in undergrad so I was always on campus
Heck, I don’t ever get a fall break. We go right through till a week at Thanksgiving - when I will be coming to Raleigh.
I had a fall break at State and we are in the same age group. It was a short break though; I think it was really just a long weekend.
I also don’t get a fall break. Work. Every day. Until I die.
Won’t be too much longer. We are both old as dirt and in terrible shape. Cheers
I don’t know the local liquor laws, but nightlife in other cities is often regulated by liquor permits and/or zoning that restricts taverns.
Raleigh’s UDO could go further with limiting bars’ locations (they’re restricted only in NX districts and broadly allowed in OX/CX/DX) and by drawing the line between restaurant and bar at 50% of sales, vs. the 70% of sales it currently uses.
Sorry but the area is getting another Bar (no food) at 518 W. Jones in the old Google fiber/Italian Restaurant site. It’s a change of use. Coming soon 300+ capacity bar. I love the building and when it was a restaurant but another bar…
New Devolve has officially opened:
I forgot the name of this development, but it’s getting new stairs.
The Re-Devolvepment actually looks pretty decent. It doesn’t look like a half-assed renovation for a fly by night bar. I’m excited to hear what the experience is like by some of the first to go in.
