General Raleigh History

I love these sorts of things too. I’d also love to see what was annexed over the last ten years since this map only goes to 2010.

Everything in red are Raleigh annexations since January 1, 2010

I’m guessing there was nothing new being built in 30’s to annex.

Well, it was the depression…so there’s that.

Awesome! I appreciate the update and figured you’d be the one that would be able to provide the information. :+1:t3:
I’m super curious what the motivation was to annex the intersection of 40 and Wade Avenue.

Don’t really know what the motivation was but by that time they had already annexed about 2/3 of 40 along the Cary/Raleigh border and were just completing that process. Also, it was just until about 20 years ago that Raleigh agreed with Cary to not go west across 40 and annex on that side of the interstate.

That’s very interesting. Did Cary agree to not go east of it?
Do you know if there’s an agreement about Raleigh going south of 40 at some certain mile marker or cross road?

Maybe…?

My sometimes faulty memory seems to recall that during the severe drought back then Falls Lake was more severely affected than Jordan Lake and Raleigh reached an agreement to buy some water from Cary. Part of that agreement was for Raleigh to accept 40 as the boundary (they wouldn’t agree to it prior to that point in time). To the south is the Swift Creek watershed protection area that is protected although some of it is in the Raleigh ETJ. I believe that Raleigh and Cary and others have all signed on and agreed to abide by the rules protecting it.

As a side note most people may not know that the City of Raleigh now owns Lake Wheeler and Lake Benson and it makes sense for Raleigh to want to protect the Swift Creek watershed area.

It’s basically Insider Wade.
(I could have said Inside Wade 2 Electric Boogaloo but that’s too easy of a joke)

I already live at Inside Wade. You mean I get even more inside?! Man, that’s almost as cool as being ITB… LOL

Not so fast @GucciLittlePig

When I lived at Inside Wade I got Will Finley IV to designate Inside Wade as Honorary ITB. So it’s officially ITB, like an ITB Annex. (If fake twitter personas can make something official)

Wait you lived here too? Where/when?! I’ve been in the single family houses since mid 2013.

Also, that’s awesome. Now I don’t feel as bad crashing all of the Downtown Raleigh Alliance events!

Seems like the legislative change that disallows forced annexation now has made an impact on how much gets annexed. I’m not taking side in that fight, but it’s clearly reduced it.

Maybe not growing outward but the city was densifying with all those 1930’s apartment buildings on Hillsborough St.

Raleigh rarely did forced annexations before they changed the law. Maybe one a year at most. The rest of the cities in Wake County never did them at all.

I lived on Fullerton from 2013 to 2017. We lucked into a lot when someone walked away from their contract the day we were there looking at townhouses. I love being downtown but IW had its benefits like I could do an 8 mile run in the morning without really ever crossing traffic.

This is so crazy. I also live on Fullerton. :exploding_head:
