Not open yet, but perhaps a future meet up steak dinner?
I love the idea of a steak dinner.
I mean I can make you one for free next time you’re in town.
I’ll expect it tomorrow night then.
The Mecca will reopen at the end of July according to TBJ. The article says Empire Eats spent between $150k-$200k on renovations, I’m really hoping they bring back late night hours. Besides Cook Out and a few places on Glenwood South, downtown needs a 24hour diner or more street meat options after the 2am bar closes.
I hope it still has the same classic diner feel (not new and shiny) AND they open on Sundays.
Looks like both will be accomplished:
“But in terms of menu items and the overall character of the restaurant, it feels pretty much the same,” Hatem said. “It’s a Raleigh institution and we’re excited about bringing it back. Hatem is still trying to determine operation hours but the diner initially will be open for breakfast and lunch before eventually resuming dinner service and returning to a 7-day schedule."
Downtown Raleigh launching an initiative where you can win prizes by shopping at downtown businesses.
A slightly meta topic about restaurants at large. This Bloomberg/CityLab article introduced how some planning researchers made a data-driven way to see whether restaurants in an area of the US are mainly franchise chain-y or they’re more unique, local places with their own individual vibes.
This is a heatmap for how unique are restaurants in the Triangle, Raleigh in general, and DTR. The smaller, yellow dots are restaurants with unique names, while the larger, purple dots have extremely common names (e.g. McDonald’s).
Turns out, from the abstract of the paper that web tool is from:
Remember, a part of the goal of science is to explain everything we see and know in the world -including the “obvious”. With that in mind, it’s kinda neat to see how you can map and quantify just how different the ~vibe~ of North Hills and DTR are, for example.

I know not all will be disappointed, but I love their wings and it was one of my preferred spots to catch a football game.
That’s too bad. I don’t eat on Glenwood South much, but the couple of times I ate there, I enjoyed it.
I thought they’re just doing renovations? Or are they coming back with a new concept?
this reminds me of a very off color saying about Peace, St Mary’s & Meradith that old Raleigh folks might recall. Discretion will prevent me from repeating it here.
There were a lot of off-color sayings that used to be said, and I remember those particularly well.
For those who love their ices coffee, me certainly, here is an article about where to find the best, if you don’t make your own.

Damn! Incognito no longer gets around the Paywall. Anyone care to just list out their picks, bullet-point style?
Some of their stories have been “locked” recently and don’t allow incognito mode viewing. It still works for most.
Cold brew is one of the hottest things…a few years too late on this one
There’s a 2018 article in the N&O with almost the same title. It’s a listicle they like to trot out from time to time.
