I always get my medical advice from the doctors here on the DTR site.

Simplicity is sometimes the best solution. I wish the unvaccinated would give it a try. It’s not just in “my world” but it’s for everyone’s sake.

Being off topic kills. Let’s not be off topic.

Lots of local restaurants downtown have always taken breaks during the summer. Fiction Kitchen did it not long ago, I think Videri does it, and others already mentioned.

Also, I think the business owners know what’s best for their businesses and employees. The restaurant business is tough even during good times, and I can certainly see the benefit of taking a break to rest and plan, especially since many of them are short-staffed right now.

I think Garland has been open most of the last year for takeout or outdoor dining with a few closures here and there for renovations. They were one of the first to create expanded outdoor seating and did a nice job with their outdoor space. It sounds like they’re short staffed and re-evaluating whether to resume takeout, not looking for an excuse to not survive.

I didn’t say they were looking to go out of business. Sorry if I wasn’t clear.

I really hope these local restaurants survive. They really are what makes Raleigh special, and if they leave, I know it’s going to likely be chains that fill their spot.

That said, as much as I’ve tried to support my old haunts, I’ve found that the pandemic has changed my habits and I’m curious how many people have experienced the same.

Everyone has different comfort levels when it comes to risk, and I think that may play into it. For me, when it became clear that being outdoors was pretty safe, I started to get back out there and was choosing places that had a better outdoor setting.

And as much as I respect places setting up protocols for COVID to keep everyone safe, I found myself going to places that were a little more relaxed and felt a little more like old times. Now these places have become my new go-to’s and while I still like my old spots, I am having to go out of my way to remember to hit them up when I have time.

Does anyone else feel the same way or have experienced the same thing?

I have become such a better cook through this, I have been IMHO making just as good or better meals and drinks at a fraction of the cost and very healthy. In no rush to get back downtown. I do wish them all the best and much success but looks like we are spiraling back to stupidity. I don’t know how many will survive the next lockdown.

Wye Hill really hit the jackpot when it comes to indoor/outdoor balance of space. Other concepts struggled in that location, but circumstances right now really play to their favor. For me, it’s about being outdoor and under some sort of roof during the daytime. Places without outdoor dining are not even a consideration for me right now.
I’d be curious to know if certain places have seen an uptick in business due to robust outdoor seating? Some other places that come to my mind that have ample outdoor seating (relative to indoor) are:
Whiskey Kitchen
MoJoe’s
Hibernian (both upstairs and sidewalk)
Plates
Trophy
Raleigh Beer Garden
Both Food Halls
Sushi Blues
Cortez
Mellow Mushroom
Mulino
Humble Pie
Raleigh Times
Sitti/Gravy (that courtyard)
Gringo A Go Go
The Station
Taverna Agora
My Way Tavern

BTW, Wye Hill just announced Saturday brunch.

So glad Wye Hill figured out that spot. It’s hard to believe so many other places failed there.

Pretty amazing when you offer a great product (and invest in the space…) instead of just tossing out junk because you think the view is enough to sustain a business on its own…

I noticed someone working at the former Snoopy’s this morning and couldn’t resist the urge to make a U turn and become the sidewalk superintendent. He indicated the owner of the abutting bar is cleaning it up to open as another bar. I didn’t get many details as it was early in the morning and he was kind enough not to blast me with his pressure washer.

(If I’m getting my info correct) These two properties are owned by the same person, have a lease by another and are now sublet to Dan, the owner of Alchemy, Cornerstone, Village, etc.

His venues are not my cup of tea, so to speak, but you gotta respect the adaptability and willingness to flip concept to stay ahead of the (re)development game…legit hustle…

On one hand they definitely don’t splurge on super nice details at these bars. Raleigh definitely lacks in bars with high end design. But I’m also thankful they at least activate these spots, which could likely be dead zones for a while.

Different owners?

For future speculation, if they get combined, both properties are zoned DX-7-SH…

Perhaps different LLCs, but I believe the same person is behind them both. I could be misremembering.
