“Many of its pharmacy customers walk two blocks from the Sir Walter Apartments, which provides affordable housing for senior citizens. It is common to see homeless people buy food with spare change, or to stand in line behind pharmacy customers carrying their belongings in multiple plastic bags, fumbling with a variety of ID cards at the counter.”
Wow, shocking that CVS selected this store as one to close. That sounds like a great time…
The article did mention how Fayetteville St. continues to see businesses moving out. Hopefully enough of this in the public consciousness will spur some serious overhaul efforts, as we’ve discussed here.
I don’t know this area that well except it’s not far from DoSo. Seems like an odd location. Too bad it isn’t further up S. Saunders closer to the Park City South area. I do like Pelagic and hope they do well here.
There are an enormous amount of empty storefronts in the newly-completed buildings at Bloc 83, Smoky Hollow, etc. Not very close to the Sir Walter, but would seem like a no-brainer opportunity for Walgreens to move in and capture a lot of traffic. But what do I know
I thought it was much closer than it actually is. Feels like 0.5 miles but its actually about 1.5 per google maps. Maybe its because Im always on a bike in that area.
This location should attract a lot of downtown workers headed to garner and SW Raleigh on their way home from work. South of DT has little to offer in the form of bottle shops and parking at Pelagic is not a fun experience. I think this spot will do just fine.
Seems the Caraleigh neighborhood would offer some support for this bottle shop…
In the future, I suppose there will be more density here because there were proposals for apartments on both the Earp’s lot and the corner across on the east side of S Saunders, IIRC ?
All the much needed development what will perk up Fayetteville restaurant/retail business has been delayed or cancelled (Salisbury Square, 121 Fayetteville, Nexus). Gonna be a long time still on life support. Only going to get worse once city employees move into the East Civic Tower and away from Faye Street.
This past Saturday night I ate at Taverna Agora on their rooftop “outdoor” deck. I hadn’t been up there previously and was surprised by how nice the vibe was, though it’s a huge stretch to call that place outdoor anymore. I was also pleased that the Greek salad was a proper Greek salad (meaning without any lettuce). It’s been a while since I was there, but the food seems to be better than it was the last time that I was there pre-pandemic. It’s now more on par with the quality when the restaurant was out Glenwood beyond Crabtree.
Trophy Maywood, the Vault, and this new place will create a little triangle of beer stops for my regular biking area. I’ll be a supporter! And likely see you at Vault occasionally.
Little Blue Bakehouse will be a coffee cafe and baked goods retail shop that will serve the downtown and SE Raleigh community.
It will house Little Blue Macaron with four additional small baking/sweets businesses,
and serve as an incubator membership kitchen for those local operations to grow and sell their products.
321 Coffee starting their upfit in the Bloc 83 courtyard. I hadn’t noticed the standing table area behind it before (power outlets under the countertops).
Some more information about Mitch’s Tavern reopening. The last few sentences about the time capsule of a bar on the ground floor are especially intriguing.
I grew up blocks from Mitch’s and Mitch, drank heavily for many years at Mitch’s and tumbled down those stairs more than once. I’ve never seen the ground floor bar open. I, too, am really intrigued.
