Hopefully a skinny tower. One decorated room per floor. Like Wayside School. Anyone ever read those books as a kid?

This sign has gone up recently. Looks like they might actually move forward with this one. Can’t remember if there is a thread for this or not. Some food trucks have been parked out here the last few weeks.

Local Icon being involved makes me optimistic.

It’s why Cary is nice and does not have a seafoam green accented apartment building.

That’s Cary for you - rarely interesting, mostly pleasant.

Seafoam is not on the approved beige chart for the city…err…town.

My history may be off, but I remember growing up here that Cary wouldn’t allow a Bojanles for the longest time. Orange roofs were not allowed from what I remember. This I believe ended up being the one that’s there now at the Maynard/Chapel Hill road intersection

That location still doesn’t have an orange roof. It does have a few orange window awnings.

That doesn’t surprise me that Cary got its way with Bojangles with this lol

A desirable place gets to make the rules. The rules make it desirable.

Desirable to some. I’ll never look at Cary the same after the Shiny Diner fiasco from the 90s. Nice to visit, but wouldn’t want to live there lol.

What was the fiasco?

They built a traditional diner, Cary decided it had to be rebuilt with beige brick, the building sat empty for months while they haggled over it. They finally compromised by allowing them to plant bushes to cover some of the aluminum. It was a war of words in the press, and teenage me got my first dose in the pettiness of town councils (not just Cary’s, they just happened to be the egregious example rubbed in my face).

The Shiny Diner is still there, but the owner sold it and I believe is now the owner of the Farmer’s Market Restaurant.

Funny you mention (Gypsy’s) Shiny Diner, this was in the Triangle Food Blog today. Maybe the Apex one won’t have as many hoops to jump through?

Interesting. For what it’s worth, the Shiny Diner still provides some delicious breakfast.

Article says The Shiny Diner is in Raleigh. It is in Cary city limits although it has a Raleigh 27606 zip code. I have been to the Diner a few times but it’s been about 10 years since the last time I went there.

More diners please, shiny or not.

The Triangle IKEA location being in Cary still makes a lot of sense though I could also see it being built in Morrisville or Brier Creek. If I had my way, I’d suggest Western Avenue at Blue Ridge Road or somewhere near I-40 and S. Saunders, S. Wilmington, or Hammond.

Ultimately, I’d prefer the Triangle’s location to be more like Atlanta’s (which has parking beneath the retail space and is part of a larger mixed-use development) rather than mostly isolated like Charlotte or the one’s I’m familiar with in Texas.

Boston also got massively screwed by a) IKEA walking away from the proposed Somerville location because Somerville gave a list of insane demands and b) a rumored Salem, NH location falling through. They really can use a second location but its hard to find a place to put it.
