General Retail/Restaurant News

Oh yeah. In fact, at our senior assembly in high school I announced that it was nickel draft night at Zack’s. Didn’t go over too well.

There’s a “your mom” joke there that I’m not gonna make.

Have we hit 24 hours of off-topic yet?

go ahead and make the joke.

My Freshman year at State, Crazy Zack’s had that wild Friday afternoon drink fest. Can’t recall if the buckets were a nickel, dime or quarter at that point (fall 83). There would be hundreds of kids stumbling back to campus down Hillsborough at 6PM after getting blotto all afternoon.

The buckets weren’t a nickel. I don’t recall what they were because I couldn’t afford them! LOL
Nickel night was all I could afford.
By 1983, the stepping up of the minimum drinking age was going into effect, right? This was the Freshman class that were legal to drink beer and wine initially, but then lost it in October until they turned 19. Then, the next few years, the same thing happened to them until they reached 21.

I recall it going to 19 Jan 1 1984. I was a freshman and could drink beer in the fall, but “not” in the spring term. I was grandfathered in when it went to 21.
Buckets may have been a quarter, but Friday nights they were still dirt cheap. Many an inebriated Friday evening started there. Hit happy hour, then go to the high school ball game and avoid all the teachers, lol.
Ah, simpler times.

Sorry there was just a lot of nickel talk. This was the only thing I could think of.

Nickel draft (like 10oz) but Blimpie’s had buckets for a quarter.

I remember $2 pitchers of Icehouse at a watering hole in SC. Did not end well. Last time I ever had Icehouse.

Ya I remember drinking nasty stuff like Icehouse and other bulk beer ‘back in the day’. Now it’s only micro brews! (when I’m cheating on my LoCarb diet). Of course we could do a whole thread just on the Raleigh brew scene.

That Friday afternoon “happy hour” had super cheap buckets. Can’t recall the exact cost. Definitely less than a dollar. That’s why there were hundreds of kids piled in there.

Yes, the drinking age went from 18 to 19 (beer wine) in January 1984. I turned 19 in January so didn’t miss a beat. Same thing with 21, was lucky on that one as well.

Had many buckets at Blimpie as well.

Thursday night’s at Mitch’s was always a blast.

Just checked out Reubens. Pretty sizeable sandwiches which means splitting is probably easy.

Walked by there just after 12 but the line was too long… so we ended up going to Vic’s instead. Haven’t been yet but that sandwich looks huge.

Hopefully it stays busy. This is the 3rd concept in a year.

Should we start a pool to pick the date it closes up? Everyone chips in a buck and closest without going over wins the pot and the opportunity to open the next future former restaurant to inhabit that cursed space.

Yeah long line but it moved decently well. It makes almost half the seating area awkward cause the line goes back into it. They’ll need to figure that out.

They need an app to order and pay for sandwiches in advance, and they can start preparing sandwiches before the lunch hour rush. Something like, order by 11:00 and pick up at your preferred lunch hour slot.

Where is Reubens? I can’t find it online or in google maps.

Oak City Meatballs has this and they’re the same company so I guess if this restaurant stays they will have the online order option as well.
