Yeah. I think this is just taking the Crapplebee’s building and up fitting it.
Had one recently when I was in Austin and I would much prefer…literally any other fast food burger to theirs.
What a waste. Figured that plot was ripe for, uh, you know… a complete redevelopment?
While it’s no five guys, it’s certainly better than Burger King, McDonald’s or Wendy’s IMO. It’s also not priced like five guys. Even at DFW, my burger, fries, & drink meal was only like 11 bucks and the burger was large. They will be very successful in that location.
Maybe it was the one I went to, but it was flavorless, dry AND slimy all at once. Never again. Wendy’s is much better.
Five Guys always makes me feel so gross. Big, sloppy, just so much. It’s like a once a year kind of craving.
@Justin6882 , oof sounds like you got a dud burger. Hate that for you.
Sad news (for me, at least). Green Monkey on Wilmington St. will be closing on March 15. They moved to the Wilmington St. space from a spot on Hillsborough St. and Ashe about a year and a half ago. They had a more challenging time getting folks into the new spot between the bus station shenanigans and the vape shop next door. I’m very sad to lose another LGBTQIA+ establishment downtown, and Rusty and Drew are great folks. They plan on moving everything online and still have some of their events at Libations 317 on Dawson St. in the Dawson Condos.
That’s really sad to hear. I talked with the a couple of times and they were just good, honest people. First impressions are really really important for any business.
When they moved in a couple of years ago, that area had so so so much crime and issues stemming mostly from large groups of kids using the bus station as a hangout spot. Their regulars likely didn’t find the area safe initially, moved on to other places, and they lost a huge portion of their expected clientele.
I think that area is moving in the right direction. Nowadays, there’s always police around and that area feels much safer. I imagine whoever moves into this spot is going to like it a lot.
Why again did they move from their former location?
If things were running well there, why did they move?
Why did they move downtown?
That’s a good question, because there’s just another drink spot where they moved from now - it’s not like that building was getting redeveloped or anything. Perhaps they just wanted to be more ingrained with the downtown scene vs the outskirts but… I certainly would’ve stayed put if business was good and they had a local following from the surrounding neighborhoods…
I was honestly surprised they moved from a well established space to an area where no one except Taz the Ripper can seem to keep a business open. No one wants to admit that the people who aren’t riding buses but hang out around the bus station should be removed or locked up, so we’ll keep seeing this unfortunately. Side note, I’m really hoping RUSbus doesn’t turn this part of downtown into the same thing.
The old site at Hillsborough/Ashe was tiny. For the type of events that usually draw crowds, like the popular Trivia Wednesdays, the new spot had tons of promise with the basement event space. Unfortunately it was a gamble that, I guess from this news, didn’t pay off.
It sure sounds like it was a gamble that didn’t pan out. I hate to see yet another empty storefront. Maybe they’ll be on the lookout for another storefront in the future while being more cautious with their decision making?
Landlord issues. Parking issues. Space issues. Their former space is empty again after the last bar that went in closed after a few months.
Maybe they should move back…
Their funds have likely been bled dry after the move downtown… would be an uphill battle to try and relocate BACK to their old spot. It’s really sounding like they just took a risk that didn’t pan out. It’s a shame, but they did this all to themselves when they could’ve continued to thrive had they just … not done anything lol
That is how capitalism works. You’re free to take big gambles, there’s not much safety net if they don’t work out, but there’s little reputational damage either and you can try again once you rebuild your position.
Too bad for them, though. Tough timing.
Well, there’s a safety net if you are big bank…just sayin’
