General Retail/Restaurant News

Might be a brewery in one of the spots? I know of one opening “near Sam Jones”. It was supposed to open this month but is now opening in May, tentatively.

Cold Off the Press is also remaining, just closed for in-store shoppers until construction is done. That place is a GEM y’all, some of the best nitro cold brew in the city, and their almond milk and coconut smoothie is to die for.

Has anyone heard if there is going to be a tenant soon at the former Beasley’s Chicken location?

We used to get a delivery from COTP weekly! LOVE their juices!

Apparently they won’t deliver to us now.

I just had lunch at Saigon Kitchen in Downtown Raleigh. It is in the old Mofu Shoppe space and I think it opened late last year.

I thought it was tasty. Prices were reasonable. It is not cheap, but no more expensive than most places downtown for lunch, and the portion was a good size. I’m going to put it in my downtown rotation.

Oh, I’ve had it. It’s super tasty. Service was a bit slow the couple of times I went, but the food is great.

So far this place is the closest you will get to authentic Vietnamese food in Raleigh from what I’ve seen. Vietnamese cuisine means a lot of herbs and vegetables and I love that they are trying here. Anise Pho on Glenwood sucked but I haven’t been there in ages since I tried the food there. But I do warn that bahn mi I had at Saigon Kitchen wasn’t great but the rest of the meals were great. I mean no pâté? Come on, that’s crazy.

One of your hot dog places downtown.

While they’re closed, maybe they could correct the misspelling on their wieners sign.

LOL.
Frankly, with this temporarily closed and Flex gone across the street, there’s nowhere to get wieners in the immediate neighborhood. :hotdog:

Do you have a recommendation for good bahn mi? With good baguette and pâté and not a hoagie roll with sliced ham?

I do. Crispy Bahn Mi in Charlotte. Bit of a drive but ABSOLUTELY WORTH IT, oh my god.

I’ve enjoyed Midtown Pho and Bee BanhMi in Cary. Those both felt pretty authentic IMO.

I haven’t been to either in probably 10 years, so I don’t know if they’re still as good as I remember it, but I always liked the sandwiches from Pho Vietnam on Buck Jones Rd near Crossroads, and Taste Vietnamese in Morrisville. I can say that I do not care for the Banh Mi from Pho Far East, which is otherwise my favorite Vietnamese place in the area

Maybe I missed this in another thread, but Switchyards is opening a new location on May 18 at 811 W Hargett St. Has anyone been to their space in Durham?

Fees are $129/mo, which seems to be cheaper than the other options in Raleigh from my limited research. That includes 24/7 access.

Here’s an old image of the location from street view:

One does have to wonder at what point do we become over saturated with gym/pilaties/yoga/smoothie places? I know wellness is hot (as it should be) but every new development’s retail spaces seem to fill with wellness facilities. I know the market will weed these down eventually, but one does wonder where are the new places for those of us committed to red meat, cheese, beer and sitting in our recliners?

Agreed, but Switchyards isn’t one of those! It’s a coworking space, like WeWork lite.

I’ve been to the Durham one as a guest and honestly I see the appeal. WeWorks tend to be in central business districts, while Switchyards locations are usually adjacent to where people actually live and have a more neighborhood feel; they’re aiming for more of a third place/coffee shop vibe. Membership is $100/month if you renew annually, which is half of what the other places in Durham like American Underground and Provident 1898 cost, and you get access to all of their locations in other cities too.

Biggest complaints I hear from my friend are temperature (it’s often freezing!) and loud music.

thanks for the info about Switchyards - I did not know that. @dylan ‘s post did prompt my comment, but was not directed at Switchyards - just something I’d been think about for awhile. Again, thanks for the details about this place in particular!

You lost me at loud music.
Is this supposed to be a place for coworking, or is it just the vibe and cosplay of coworking?

Under “our clubs”, I see Boylan in the city of “Raleigh-Durham”.
We can’t get our MSA combined, but people keep seeing the two cities as one like Winston-Salem.

haha it’s for remote workers who want to be around buzzy activity while they work. Ideal for someone who would rather work at Jubala or Transfer co. than a library.

Personally, I couldn’t function like that for focused corporate-type work, but I also own a photography business and would thrive in this kind of environment if I just wanted to lock in on editing or website updates. I think it’s a good fit for a lot of millennials tbh.
