There’s gonna be a Publix nearby soon. Making food at home is always a cheaper option
Ashley Christensen’s Project Xtra Crispy is now BB’s Crispy Chicken:
What does that have to do with anything? I’m pointing out that Person St. could use a place that isn’t $20 a plate. Are you saying that you hope it’s upscale and expensive?
Was just eating at the Station this weekend and my entire table said the same thing…thats the only place at night that isn’t a bank loan to eat out at.
Curious as to why so many people dislike this notion. I see a lot of eye-roll reactions to it.
Am I in the minority in hoping Standard has more casual affordable options than the previous Standard, Craword or Jolie?
Well there are two of us at least. I always wanted a good greasy spoon next to the new Oak City Cycling spot, which old 50’s booths and such in it and an omelet for $4.50.
I’d love that, but I’m thinking at this point it’s going to be hard for a place like that exist with rents rising like they are.
The Pharmacy is actually really good and prices are fine, but they aren’t open for dinner. I just think with Crawford, Jolie and Stanbury all within walking distance, that market would be saturated by now.
There is a definite void when it comes to a normal, decent priced dinner in this district. The Station has good prices, but man their beer selection and food leaves a lot to be desired. I think if Standard Beer + Food has a menu/pricing like The Times, they’d absolutely kill in that spot. I know it’s anecdotal, but myself and my group of friends in the neighborhood would be certainly be regulars (as we often have this exact conversation).
Definitely think there’s room in that price point. I’d include Oakwood Pizza Box as a solid and affordable option.
Your’e not alone, the District C FB page (where this is located) has people wanting the same thing. There may be some overly dramatic flourishes by some but the point is still the same, that more casual ($) options between N. Bount (to the west) and Tarboro (to the east) would be nice. But not much we can do about it other than let our preferences be known
Also, I’ve heard good things about Smokestacks Cafe on E. Lane. Haven’t been myself, but that would seem to fit this price point in the basic area.
Same here. I saw on Nextdoor that a lot of people are enjoying the food.
I want to reach out and help them a little bit with their logo/branding. As someone who works in the field, I can’t help but allow those things to cloud my judgement of a place.
PS. Talked to my buddy who knows some of the guys involved with Standard Beer + Food and they are supposedly going to be keeping it casual with the menu. Lets hope he’s right!
Karla and I love Smokestacks and I love the local story behind the owners. I’d encourage everybody to give them a try.
In agreement, I live in the hood and don’t go to The Station, the food just isn’t worth it in my opinion which is a shame. Honestly, I would love to work with them to create a new veggie burger, it’s lacking in flavor and texture. Im sure it was adequate 15 years ago but times have changed and people expect more.
I would gladly welcome a quality Thai restaurant in the district, something not overdone fancy/fusion and affordable for dine in our take out. We seem to be lacking that in the city and especially downtown.
Did you ever have the one at the old Rockford? Hands down still the best one i’ve had in 20 years of an evolving downtown food scene. I don’t know the exact ingredients but think it was a garlic, lentil paddy with a red pepper aioli and toasted brioche bun. Tir na Nog actually had an ok one for a primarily meat and potato place but Rockford is the one I always went back for.
Sorry to say I don’t think so, that sounds very tasty. I know I ate there the first time visiting the city around 10 years ago but think I had a burrito.
Rockford has changed hands.
That’s why I said “old Rockford”
Standard says they “should be open in March barring any major setbacks”.
Five Star update. They’re closing in May and reopening in June. They’re just waiting on the permits to start the upfit. They’ll be in the entire front space. The BBQ place will be in the back little corner by the train tracks and small pond by 42 Street Oyster Bar. From what I gathered…
Also, vintage Kung Fu movies with Chuck Norris for the win…
