wow…that is awesome

thx for the research, nice to know!

are they having a farmer’s market there? What are those tents?

lol. Actually, 2nd kid. We have parents that live close, are retired and love to babysit. I’m sure we’ll have less time to go out, but my point is, we aren’t going to hold back when we have the opportunity.

Wow they have a band too…

Ahh - free un-limited babysitters. That would help. We never had that and I get jealous of parents who have the grandparents close by.

Something has to be done about the Go Triangle bus depot around Moore Square. More security is needed. So two fights in the middle of Wilmington street in broad daylight. Businesses there definitely affected by this.

Can we all please stop using the word ghetto? It’s a pejorative that’s both racially charged and insensitive.

The bus depot has been there for years and many nearby business have done well. In fact, most of the businesses surrounding the depot on Blount have thrived (Cafe Luna - been there for years, Tir Na Nog - was very successful and now Brewery Bhavana in that space, Bida Manda and Duck and Dumpling before it, and Pour House has also been around a long time).

Not that two fights in the middle of the street at any time of day are a good thing! How can we solve that problem?

@jnl111 I’m guessing you are fairly new to the area? The Moore Square area has always been a little gritty, and I’d say right now it’s probably the least gritty it’s been in at least the last 13 years.

Agree with @John that the word ghetto needs to go.

Yeah Moore Square is just surround by things that are lacking desirability.

West Side: Loud, dirty bus station

South Side: Half dead City Market that could badly need a massive renovation.

Southeast Side: A whole block is just a middle school.

East Side: Abandon Bug Exterminator building, two homeless services facilities, and a half block of gravel parking. The Outpost is cool though.

Northeast Side: Severely dated Federal District Court Campus

North Side: Children’s Museum and a church. IMO, the Marbles is a bit dated and looks like it was built in the 90’s which adds to the dated ambiance of the area.

This is all the fault of decades of poor city management of the area and bad luck.

Here are some ideas that I think can improve the area:

West Side:

  • Short term: Switch buses to electric bus to reduce noise and smell.
  • Short term: Actual enforcement of laws and rules. How many times do you see people smoke and then throw cig butts on the ground and no one at GoRaleigh cares.
  • Long term: Homeless housing improvements. GoRaleigh Station is currently a homeless shelter/loitering area. It shouldn’t be, build a no-restrictions city run homeless shelter/program.
  • Long term: Transportation Tunnels. Downtown Raleigh surface grid is not optimized for bus service, roads too small, corners too sharp, GoRaleigh station can’t handle max capacity during rush hour. Raleigh needs to build mile long tunnels through downtown Raleigh strictly for bus service. Cut through the grid and sink the GoRaleigh station underground.

South Side:

  • Short Term: Non-stop city events. Weekly night markets, permanent open container zone, minor improvements to the City Market.
  • Long Term: City needs to purchase the entirety of the City Market.
  • Long Term: Major Renovation of the City Market including replacing the parking lot with an expanded city market, maybe underground parking, closing the interior street to car traffic.

Southeast Side:

  • Short Term: None
  • Long Term: Relocate the Middle School to a safe and improved campus nearby.

East Side:

  • Short term: None
  • Long term: Consolidate all the properties, find a developer to build a modern entertainment complex and tower project, maybe a high end hotel, apartments, condos, shops, restaurants.
  • Long term: More homeless and mental health and substance abuse programs.

Northeast Side:

  • Short term: None
  • Long term: Replace the District Court with a modern structure with structured parking, maybe work a deal to give a small portion of the south end of the block for private development. Really unlikely but worth a shot.

Northside:

  • Short term: none
  • Long term: Redevelop Marbles so that it occupies the lower floors of a mixed use development.

And Watts & Ward also seemed to be doing very well PreC. I’ve heard Royale might not make it, but for Covid/biz reasons.

Most of these things aren’t the City’s. Marbles isn’t City (partly county/non-profit), City Market is private and has been unwilling to sell, school is the County, and good luck with the Feds on that block, unfortunately. I think the City has planned on selling their lots on East side of square to a developer. Similar to how they sold the building/lot for Transfer for cheap although this will probably be more at market price. Not sure what’s holding that up though. Agree on electric buses, homeless housing (somewhere), trying to encourage City Market private owners (now that it may have more leverage this year) as being improvements.

I’d like to see the temporary parking lot at the corner of Wilmington and Martin become a temporary food truck rodeo with open air dining until a building is built on that parcel.

At this point, are we assuming any previously proposed buildings are completely dead. (Not to mention that Highwoods never builds anything here)

No Deb. If people can not with civility businesses get hurt. It’s a shit show around that depot. Regardless of the race or income level. I can’t stand to walk up Hargett street sometimes around there. Time to get real and put more security there to make it a place for EVERYONE. We need all people downtown. Not all feel safe. And until so, that area will suffer. It’s not ok in that area.

That’s kind of how I feel about Glenwood South right now…

Sad. I really liked Royale.

I don’t know that for sure, just something I heard offhand last night from someone familiar with the owners. Hopefully I’m wrong.
