Same @RaleighBikeLady. The only negative thing I’ve seen this past year that I’ve been riding was the time someone had jumped off the parking deck above and they closed it down.
City Plaza restaurant update:
Crema is looking to reopen on Monday
Sign for Element ‘Plant-based Gastropub’ is up for the spot where Gigi’s used to be. Looks like they are still a little ways off from opening
If we have confidence that this virus will be behind us next Summer, this is actually not a bad time to start planning for something new. It could take a year to get it open anyway with all that needs to happen at the site.
Same. I think places can seem scarier if you don’t use it than it is in reality. I rode the bus to the station like 300 times. Never felt unsafe. There are police parked in the station frequently as well. But I bet people don’t see those if you never go through the actually bus drop off and pick up part.
K&W Cafeteria in Cameron Village bites the dust. Not sure where those of a certain generation will go for supper now that it and Ballantine’s are gone.
This one cuts deep… While at NCSU I lived on East Campus 2 years and another year at a studio apartment on Smallwood. We went to K&W because it was so much closer than any of the dining halls. Now, we take the family there (well take out these days). This will be missed by our family.
Back in Winston, my grandparents literally went to K&W daily, sometimes twice per day. K&W runs deep for us.
I used to go to K&W a lot back in the day, but haven’t been there in many years. When I was at State, it was pretty affordable, but it started to get pretty darned expensive for what it was.
That said, I have two audio memories burned into my brain.
“Sal-it?” said strongly as a one word question instead of salad.
“Serve ya meat?” as another barking question from the server at the meat section.
I sat behind a Ballantaine in home room all through jr. & sr. high school. I was so sorry to see them close. K&W was always the back up, a bit cheaper but I knew at Ballantaine’s I’d always run into someone I knew in that small-town Raleigh way. Between the virus and changing eating habits, cafeteria’s seem to be struggling everywhere. I guess now CV can get another fast casual national chain. Talk about your gentrification issue!!
Southern vegetarian!! I don’t eat meat, I just use it to season!!
We run into this problem when we take college students to Rome, IT. The Romans in particular season often with meat, so don’t consider it a meat dish, lol. Vegan students face an ever more difficult situation, no cheese? Romans look like at you like you are from Mars.
We lived near a Picadilly Cafeteria in Richmond for nearly 4 years. Last time we were in town we drove around our old neighborhood (between the West End and Short Pump = The “Far West End” if you will haha) and Picadilly had closed. Well… a lot of West Broad was looking a little rough. #RVA
