NC State historically has always had a high % of smokers. It’s nothing new.
That’s not surprising but we need more two story bookstores, cafes and bars than this crap around our local universities.
I went to State decades ago, and I’m a non-smoker. In fact, I am a pretty belligerent non-smoker. I don’t recall the university having a particularly larger number of smokers than any other places I went to back then.
I’d dare say it’s a heck of a lot more red tape to start and run a bar (especially near a college campus) than one of these vape shops - ALE isn’t raiding vape shops after all.
The amount of zyn kids consume right now is also probably a big driver. Unlike vaping you won’t really know when they’re doing it too.
You can’t post that kind of juicy shit and then delete it! I’ll repost it instead ![]()
An insider told me the family who owns multiple vape shops along hillsborough & western blvd uses the vape shops as a front to order mass amounts of tobacco products and then drive them across date lines to nyc and nj etc and sell them at stores up there for double the price
all a big money laundering scheme, family run nonetheless. The same insider told me the second and third floors of that new building is probably going to be a living space for the “employees” (off the book family members)
You can do laundry there too? How clever!
We have lots of “laundromats” down here as well.

I notice that they tend to be far (in terms of walking distance) from student apartments and/or are in older buildings with limited parking. Whoever runs them seems to know every possible loophole to sell questionable substances (kratom, nitrous, etc.).
I mean, a simple “anonymous tip” should get that shit sorted out sooner than later, no?
Didn’t get a pic, but work has started on the old Umami space. Is this still expected to be a Raising Cane’s?
Yes it is. Hopefully they can fix the exterior after that terrible shiplap stuff was added when it was the pizza place for a few months.
It’s “corporate”; you can rest assured that the finished product will be aligned.
Saw a lot of work going on when I was walking by last week so it does look like that project is moving ahead. Wonder when their expected opening is.
Raising Canes will be great for that area of the street, but damn I wish something like Amedeo’s or Sammy’s had moved in there. That H-Street Kitchen remodel from 2017-2018 was great - but the concept just didn’t fit. Hate that it’s all just going to get stripped down to a huge quick/casual fried chicken spot.
I work on campus and the percentage of students that vape is shockingly high (or at least it feels that way to me). I’ve also had some interesting conversations with some of the local bottle shop owners and the reality is Gen Z isn’t consuming alcohol as much and they are vaping/using THC products more.
So realistically from a consumption standpoint there probably isn’t a good business case to add alcohol based establishments near a college campus because students don’t want them.
Most college students are under 21 and can’t legally drink, so there’s that data point.
What kind of boring losers don’t throw college keggers? Weak.
You throw keggers at private homes.
In keeping with my redundant photos today…
There does seem to be some other construction behind it. There’s a sign about the YMCA so I guess satellite facility?
