Hillsborough Street Mixed Use Projects Near NC State

I will look this weekend to see if the N&O lets subscribers into their archives, and how far back they go. It may have been 73,(sorry 74) the year for the 1st national championship for the Wolfpack when streaking was going strong - there were signs at the old Union next to DH Hill that told folks to meet there to streak after home victories. It was literally a crazy story.

74 was the first championship. We had just moved to Raleigh that January and my parents were celebrating my mother’s birthday at the restaurant at the top of the Holiday Inn (hair curler) on the evening that they beat UCLA to go to the championship game.

I constantly screw that up, thanks for the correction. I went years thinking we beat UCLA for the championship, I was in 3rd grade and didnt get to stay up for real championship, lol.

It just felt like the championship game because not only did State avenge its sole loss from early in the season, and not only was it a double OT thriller, it ended the run of championships by UCLA, and they did it on “home turf” in Greensboro.

Thanks. I forgot to go by earlier and this saves me a trip. I gotta go take some pictures of every project in Raleigh or else I will be disappointing someone who already judges me for not living downtown.

This building is turning out pretty decent actually. The scale is still staggering for the area. I am looking forward to the fencing coming down so I can check it out up close.

Are you referring to Mission Valley?

I don’t know if he is or not, but boy could Mission Valley use a renovation! The amount of land there is tremendous for it to be sitting there in the state it’s in. There could be a full on mini student village with housing, entertainment, retail, etc.

going to have to talk to the catholics to get that to happen………they are the largest property owners in the world………not sure they are that motivated for Raleigh’s mixed-use needs. Probably need to keep up the legal defense as well….

Church’s transact in real estate, even in markets like NYC where they likely won’t be able to purchase property again:

Does the church own the shopping center? Confused…

Looked it up on imaps. Yes it does.

And it pays property taxes on this 17+ acre parcel.

I’m pretty sure the N&O archives are available at the State Library across the street from the Legislative Building. I remember looking up old articles on Microfiche 20 years ago. Maybe it’s digitized now?

newspapers.com has full scans of, I believe, every edition of the N&O going back to the 1870s. (It was the Observer until 1880)

You get a free trial, but I’ve done a paid subscription from time to time when I’m researching something. I have used this to research background information about the transit planning process in the 1990s for example.

I believe the text is searchable as well.

Exactlty what I just found. I dont want to waste a 7 day free trial on just 2 questions. I will see if I can get in thru my uni library. However, I am proctoring my exam as I type. I do have a pile of blue books in my immediate future, so this might be delayed a wee bit.

Cant use AI to generate answers for the test questions. Love it. Students will actually have to be well-versed with the material. Love it even more!!
