I guess it is closer than I thought. Somehow it always looked farther in my head. Never actually tried it. I suppose it’s bikable. But it’s also not on the way from work if you’re coming home from either Centennial or Main Campus and that makes it more arduous.
When I lived in Carrboro and worked at UNC I had multiple grocers on the way and it’s a big deal.
doesnt it count as a “15 minute city” if a quick bus ride to the grocery store from the apartments you mention is a measly 8 minute ride…on a single bus line with no connections? I don’t understand the complaint here, to be honest. Who wants to walk with a bunch of bags of groceries anyway? The bus for groceries is great if you don’t drive a car and don’t want to walk
Technically, a 15 minute city is about being 15 minutes walkable or by bicycle to most resources. I’d suppose that this is likely a 15 minute bike ride, but the steep grade along the route and the general lack of good bike infrastructure isn’t ideal. Also, a 15 minute city isn’t measured based on access to just a grocery store. North of campus is way more representative of a 15 minute city than the area down Avent Ferry.
In the perfect 15 minute world, the Catholic Church wouldn’t have put their giant cathedral in its current location, and they would have developed that land and all of Mission Valley into a university version of North Hills instead to serve both the main campus and centennial campus students. THAT would have been a 15 minute city development.
Per the TBJ, the long vacant CityPlat holding at 2510 Hillsborough St is finally turning into something. A “national retailer” will take 80% of the space. Construction to begin in April.
I hope it’s a tiny Walmart to go next to the tiny Target!
This has been an eyesore almost since I moved here. I am so happy for literally anything going here!
Yep @Justin6882 . I was working for a small firm from 2013 through 2015 and drove by this when the crane was first put up, then went dormant. Can’t remember when the crane came down, but it was up there for a long time (years) with no activity at the site.
Wow, I remember that but man it’s been a minute. The article (and the one it links to) mentioned how it was rezoned from 5 stories to 7. And after only 12 years of waiting, we’re getting 1. LOL
Also fun trip down memory lane tidbit at the end of the other article:
This week’s Planning Commission meeting also marked the final one for Raleigh’s outgoing planning director Mitchell Silver, who is moving to New York City to manage its parks department.
Honestly, just about the best case scenario for this lot! Much more height + density than what was there previously (one-story bank branch and surface parking), and MORE RETAIL!!!
EDIT: According to @5pts all the ground floor spaces are apartment amenities. What a joke. I take back my statement entirely.
