Holiday Inn and New Indigo Hotel

This looks to be some of the first enhancements coming online as a result of text change TC-3-21.

Yes, it’s done on a parcel by parcel basis (just as our sidewalk widenings are), but what was previously codified was a painted lane (on a parcel basis), so this is a huge improvement. Code changes like this allow for enhanced connectivity as development occurs and with the amount of development happening locally, enables small / incremental changes to add up to substantive improvements in the built environment.

This is an example showing how a new lane can be added / transitioned where it did not exisit prior.

Annnd, just got off the phone to get more information. This site will not be incorporating those cross sections (if you look at the actual site plan). They just pulled the standard street cross section (which includes the new UDO updates). I’m seeking clarification on why they are not being incorporated (believe it has to do with the “Christmas Plan” / downtown incorporation, unfortunately) - I will report back :upside_down_face:

Got sucked in. If you don’t have FB, you’re not missing out. Just NIMBY as NIMBY will be. Big buildings are bad.

I’ve come to the realization that nobody likes anything. So might as well do stuff anyways.

I’ll nominate you for CC. :raised_hands:t3:

It’s like that saying “can’t be mad at a gator for being a gator” or something like that.

Can’t be mad at a growing city doing growing city things. If we don’t build up downtown, the people are coming to the region regardless so we need to get the core right.

I love the traffic story, you are really onto something about the traffic increase being so small for the new buildings. Would be cool to have a graphic or soemthing to arm people with in these convos.

The more that’s downtown, the less traffic there will be in downtown. The less people will have to go to multiple places at a time.

I try to illustrate this with the people in Wendell. If there’s more in Wendell, the less we leave Wendell, thus less traffic. It’s like talking to a rock though.

Data. May not be pretty but tells the story.

You jumped on the same comment I immediately gravitated toward - what historic charm is this new stuff erasing? I’m pro-keeping-Seaboard, but otherwise it’s a lot of surface lots, incredibly non-descript one-story nothingburgers, and one quirky round hotel that is almost impossible to retrofit to modern hotel standards.

Now the 60s and 70s demolitions across the city… those erased a whole lot of historic charm.

Once we get some decent transit options and some better connectivity, we’re in pretty good shape.

These people need to go drive around some other cities for a week, come back and count their blessings.

Would be cool to see some picture of like 8 apartment building with a big number of residents and then show… Traffic increase of "small #. People love visuals.

Not to be too much of a pessimist but those people aren’t going to listen to the data. Maybe some will consider it, and those are the ones that are acting in good faith, but most of the people that are engaged enough to look at the numbers are going to write those off as developer propaganda.

I have arrived at the jaded conclusion that the way to deal with these people is to steamroll over them.

My comment was more for those reading vs the NIMBY. Too many people blindly believe words with no facts. I want them to blindly believe my facts vs his words.

I can vouch for this. I barely ever have to leave Knightdale unless I’m going to the mall or a specific restaurant.

I loathe going on Facebook, but took a peek. If they’re all so up in arms about the Holiday Inn, I can only assume most of them aren’t even aware of what Goodnight’s is being torn down for.

Who’s willing to stir that hornet’s nest?

They would rather build more suburbs out in WF, Clayton, Holly Springs etc. yet those will guaranteed cause more traffic as everyone that lives there has to drive everywhere they go. And it will clog all the main roads going into downtown. But if those people lived downtown….
