This is good news FYI. I’m close with the new Neptunes management and they’re very excited for the future partnerships between the venues.
Throwing in the comedy club status here as well. Hoping it’s able to compete with Goodnight’s. Looks like it’s going to be a cool spot.
Great, Downtown Raleigh getting even more car-oriented. Performance Art Center front space will be turned into a car drop-off. You know where the city’s Christmas tree normally goes. Really couldn’t have pushed this to the side of the building? I guess DPAC is no better in this matter but still. This city just keeps moving backwards without delay but we can’t get anyone to build BRT.
I know doom and gloom is kind of your thing, but this sounds like it’s mostly about handicapped accessibility and having a protected area for waiting for Ubers/Lyfts without jamming up South Street. Plus Lichtin Plaza as it stands is not exactly the most pleasant, highly activated space.
The new design still has plenty of open plaza, with a much nicer looking ground treatment as well.
It would look much nicer without cars.
Weird I wonder why.
lol I like the lack of bike infrastructure as shown in the render. Sorry dude you’ll have to bike on the street, no budget for bike lanes.
I feel like biking on this segment of South Street will be totally fine seeing as it will no longer be even a minor thorough fare.
New design:
- Room for a large Christmas tree and festival space
- Improved ADA accessibility
- Improved access for Rideshare vehicles
I would hope the drop off could be designed as a shared street where it’s really a sidewalk that cars can drive on, but for the majority of the time it is pedestrian access. Should be a no-brainer here.
Let me add the two other renderings of this. I’m not sure this is a big deal. This was just one conversation I had with someone who works there and while parking is always a top of mind concern for visitors, accessible parking was even more important to them. This seems like a response to that feedback.
If you’ve ever driven, walked or biked through this section of South Street before or after a graduation, play or event, you’ll know this is badly needed. 99% of people drive to this location, not catering to that reality would be foolish.
This is a subtle but massive improvement.
As someone who loves walkable infrastructure, I have to agree with this. It became a bit of a shitshow with stop-and-go traffic. Adding a dedicated area for pickup and dropoff, since Raleigh is still very car-centric, is welcome here.
It kinda adds a nice, grand outdoor entrance area to the auditorium, too.
I don’t see why the sidewalk can’t bend around both sides of that oval island and leave area for a fountain or landscaped area in the middle of it
Just sharing this for illustrative purposes. This is a project in NYC where we determined the street usage was less, but still required drop off. During events or deliveries is when it gets the most use. But the street is flush with the “curb,” and there are ADA pavers along the side to help. Also bollards.
Okay, I think you’re right guys. We’re a car-oriented metro and that will not change any time soon.
Also, to the point above, even public transit heavy metros still need a spot for Ubers and people with accessibility needs.
Makes sense. I do hope they use nice brick pavers or something though!
Now that is an iconic photo.
Thank you, I thought it was worth pulling the phone out for, the way the rain was coming through the lights, and lights glistening on the sidewalk
