Are they keeping the old gym as well? It looks like it was added on too not that long ago. The landscaping/pathways suggest its staying.

Phase 2 of the Park’s Master Plan has a new aquatic facility going where the old community center is located.

Some of the original stonework for the park, this pedestrian bridge crosses Garner Branch near Worth Street. Garner Branch was “restored” back in September of 2002. More info on the restoration can be found here.

It’s like the Alexander Family YMCA and the Hunt Library at State had a baby.

Okay you friends of Chavis Park out there, I have an idea that has been brewing in my head for a couple years, and I feel ready to take some action if I can get some fellow support. I love Chavis Park, it’s got a rich history and the potential to be something very special (although for many, myself included, it already is special). I take the greenway through this park multiple times a week and I love hearing the soft babbling of the Garner branch as it flows through the park making its way to Walnut Creek. When you look at the creek though it’s full of trash which breaks my heart. This hurts the beauty of our park and the health of the larger ecosystem. I’d love if this community would get folks together on a regular basis (maybe bi-annual?) to do a Stream/Park litter clean up. Growing up I regularly participated in litter cleanups and always found them so meaningful and fun. To try and build some excitement for participation I came up with a name for our crew. The “Chavis Park Stream Team” I even made a logo to try and build more excitement. Check it out:

If we can get enough people I’d love to print them on t-shirts to wear proudly as we purge the park trash. If we get 25 folks to participate, t-shirts would be less than 20 bucks. We may be able to wrangle up some help from the city to get trash pickers and trash bags, but for another 20 bucks we could supply our own tools which sounds easier to organize. So, WHO’S WITH ME?! I’m double vaccinated, and ready to do some good for our community and environment!

And if you need a bit more inspiration check this out:

The really rewarding part of that Spirited Away clip starts at 4:40 just fyi haha.

ALSO, if you want to potentially participate feel free to Direct Message me so I can gauge interest.

Thanks!

If you want to plan it, we can certainly put it up as a meetup on the page. Let me know if that would help.

Excellent, thanks Leo! I’m chatting with the folks who’ve replied trying to find a date, and once we have that date locked I’d love to post it there.
