Sounds like they aren’t sure what it will be - I do believe the idea is to do both - mimic Pullen in some regard and also add some outdoor recreation pool, but I don’t think they’ve actually figured out what the reality will be
This was part of the original master plan I believe and will be where the field/track is. I could be mistaken but that’s what I recall from CAC meetings back in the day.
EDIT: It does mention using the track/field for the pool in the very brief article. This isn’t a new plan though.
Let’s start one as more changes are palnned.
Super nerdy observation, but that stylized diagram makes me 90% sure this is being designed by either EVOKE Studio or Vines Architecture, both two of the best firms in the region. We’ll get a killer project if either one is involved.
Looking forward to this. I live about a 5 min drive from Chavis. Was considering buying a $15/month pass to go use the gym there and see how that goes after moving further way from my previous gym in the Village District.
Really liked Chavis when I visited previously for a ULI event. Great use of the space with varied uses, and awesome views of DTR.
Just realized there are two threads for this park - “John Chavis Memorial Park” and this one @dtraleigh
Thanks. For some reason I couldn’t find this when I was looking the other day.
I read today that EVOKE was the recommended firm and I think that they were approved by City Council.
In the grand history of parents worrying about their kids, my bet is the kid will be fine in the rope mesh.
Yeah it takes a little while to get used to that - our older son started climbing up there when he was 2.5 yo, and finally started climbing up the BIG green net last summer when he was almost 4. Slightly terrifying at first!
My baby girls are almost 15 and just finished the classroom part of driver’s ed. The patenting fear never goes away.
Oh heck yes! This would be an awesome amenity, helps amplify how strong our region is at competitive swimming, and hopefully the access and programs will encourage more Black people to learn how to swim (a real issue - per the CDC drowning death rates for Black people under age 30 are 1.5 times higher than the rates for White people, and Black children ages 10-14 years drown at rates 7.6 times higher than White children.)
Where did these come from? Would like to learn more (timing, breakdown of amenities, etc)
Yesterday’s city council meeting.
Floor plan shows competition pool, toddler pool with zero entry, outdoor recreation pool, lazy river, water slide.
This looks like Evoke Studio’s work… any more info?
EDIT: confirmed lol
Just what’s in the pdf link. It says Evoke on there page 12 .
This is a nice aquatics center! Lap pool, therapy pool, toddler pool, outdoor pool, lazy river, and water slide?? Hope this comes to fruition. Only thing is the locker rooms are weirdly small for this many pools lol. But this would be such a great thing for this area and for Raleigh—don’t think there are any other aquatics centers like this locally.
There are- they’re just private/country clubs lol, so it’ll be super cool to have this as a public facility!!!
