Same here. One of many movies that paints development/developers in a negative light.
If you like kids movies with subliminal messaging towards adults, watch Wall-E. The human race is heading that direction faster than anyone is willing to admit.
And by the time most people even realize what’s going on…It’ll be too late
Funnily enough, houses like that tend to do well in real life as long as the surrounding developments don’t just put up a blank wall next to them. I always wanted one of those little carriage houses surrounded by big apartment buildings in Manhattan.
Maybe fits better around Chavis Park? 100% whatever tower gets built here will have a parking base that will tower over this house.
20 story rezoning on the southern part of the Lincoln-Pope block will be reviewed by the Planning Commission on May 24th.
New Business and historical area and historical property nearby so I’m guessing this will take a long time to rezone.
Maybe not. Memo from RHDC to Planning Commission…
Recommendation
The RHDC, on a vote of 9-0, supports the rezoning application provided that conditions
addressing the following concerns are added:
- That mitigating impacts on adjacent historic sites be established, including structure
and vibration monitoring on the Pope House during construction; - That an archeological survey be conducted on the project site;
- That the development be sensitive in its design to remain relevant to the context of
the area; - That the portion of the structure that fronts on Stronach’s Alley be designed in such a
way that it pays homage to the history of and activates the alley, and that the exterior
materials reinforce the significance of the alley; and - That massing be considered that allows the historic scale of the alley to be taken into
account and used along the alley design.
The highlighted portion below (from slide 20) is interesting. Whether or not it is the city’s intention, I wonder if Stronach’s Alley will end up being a test case for better-activated mid-block throughways. This could eventually lead to fewer impenetrable full-block-wide developments and better navigability and street-level experience.
This rezoning hits the council on Tues, June 21, will most likely go to public hearing as stated.

The request is consistent with the 2030 Comprehensive Plan. The Planning Commission voted 6-0 to recommend approval of the request. Staff recommend a public hearing date of August 16, 2022.
Here’s a live shot of the area in question. So this would be the paved parking lot on the right plus some area just to the top right of the Pope House.
This is exciting news. It would be great to have something here instead of just surface parking.
Is it common in Raleigh for archeological work to be done on lots prior to development? It makes sense, and I know it happens other places, but I didn’t know if that was common here. I’ve never heard of anything interesting being found.
"Development will begin as quickly as possible once the rezoning is approved.” -Developer, from the N&O article on this.
Well that was quick. Site Review Application submitted.
ASR-0054-2022. Waiting for the city to upload in the next few days.
This is the New York developer planning 20 stories? Or is that another part of this lot
Yep, Tidal, 20 floors.
I know previously someone stated that the ASR portal updates on some Wednesdays. Hopefully this is a week it does.
Super lame and short for that block. Really felt like this was the other hottest site downtown tied with the N&O block.
