Moore Square

Who said it was news… it literally says “we argue that” in the final paragraph. It’s very clearly an opinion piece.

right…the next to last sentence talks about arguing.
dunno there was just no context when it was posted i thought it was supposed to be news
hence my post. would be nice to have a source rather than someone else’s random words without attribution so we can find out more

I’m assuming it’s this: Homelessness in US cities and downtowns | Brookings

I thought I had seen that exact statement somewhere else. I’m thinking I saw it listed on an article or video about BART or LA Metro.

It is the Brookings report linked by wanderer.

What is not opinion Is the research that’s been done on housing first policies for alleviating homelessness at the root of the problem. Rather than dealing with the symptoms. It is also intuitively true. If all cities just begin sweeping homeless people out of their downtowns, they don’t magically find jobs and housing. They may leave the region and wind up in another city, which is then just going to sweep them to the next city. This is not a holistic solution, but is the current public opinion with an increase in panhandlers and criminal activity on the streets.

Part of the problem is that municipal governments like Raleigh have to deal with the impact of homelessness without the tools to go at the root causes. If Raleigh wanted to “clean up” Moore Square, law enforcement is one of the few tools they have.

Education, labor supply, inflation, behavioral health care … even investments in affordable housing, are largely controlled by the state or federal governments.

Raleigh having trouble enforcing order do they have the tools to wipe out the homeless population or at least housed them is unknown. They could use the police to enforce Moore square homeless problem. But things like housing, education is out of their hands.

I dare not ask what is meant by “wipe out” here when housing folks is an alternative option…

I said the city power of housing homeless folks is unknown. But the city could force the homeless out, at least put them in the Salvation Army. You can even partner up with a church or something and develop a refuge. This sounds like an easily solvable situation.

If health care in our country was available to all of its citizens, health care would be available for mental illness and substance abuse; which puts many unhoused people on the

For the crime of living outdoors you have been conscripted to serve in the Salvation Army, where you will serve in the 81st bell-ringing division until such time as the War on Poverty is successful

RFQ for the Cafe in Moore Square has opened. Looked through the RFG and didn’t see any specifics as to the kind of place they were looking for other than the fact that they want something kid friendly. Really really really hoping Char-grill submits a bid.

I think the Char-Grill owners would like to stay at their current lot so that they could have their store in the new development… if or when it happens. Weren’t the owners the sole proponent?

If a burger concept didn’t work out there… why on earth would another burger place try? lol

Skyhouse must be having a hard time renting apartments. These rates are incredibly cheap. They actually have a studio listed at $990 a month. If you got 2 months free that breaks down to $825 a month.

Highest vacancy rate we have seen in the six years we have been there. About half the units on our floor are currently available.

Predicted they would have a tougher time leasing up once they were no longer the only high-rise option, particularly competing with newer units.

When I was looking downtown their resident reviews were pretty abysmal, so I chose the Elan instead. They’ll have to build up some goodwill.

It just wasn’t good? Crinkle fries, Hunts ketchup and Pepsi were all enough to keep me away :joy:

I was fine with the Square Burger food and shakes. But they closed at 6 pm which is well before our dinner hour.

Hope the new vendor considers staying open a bit longer in the evenings.
