I don’t consider the crime we have around Glenwood South and Moore Square to be “minimal”.
For the center and major nightlife zone of the biggest city in a metro area with over 2 million people? It really is.
Exactly! Downtown is pretty safe.
Yeah, I agree. The amount of people turning right on red and parking in the bike lanes is anything but minimal.
Luckily, there are two highrises planned right around Moore Square that should add a lot more density. Just waiting on those shovels.
That area has been a major nightlife zone of the biggest city in a metro area for decades but crime is up exponentially. I do think crime is an issue on Glenwood South and around Moore square and the City of Raleigh thinks so too.
That’s a cute comment but I was more referring to the hundreds of illegal firearm and drug arrests and the homicides.
From the police chief’s report earlier this year….
By my count, the entirety of the downtown core saw 67 drug violations, 10 firearms violations and zero homicides. Additionally, much of the increase in arrests was due to more intentional “proactive” activity by police instead of an increase in people having drugs or firearms.
I work and go to church downtown. It’s incredibly safe by any reasonable measure. I do think there’s unfortunately been an increase in the homeless population since the pandemic started, and some highly visible drug use at Moore square last year. We’re not fixing the first issue until we build more housing, especially subsidized housing for people who are chronically homeless, and the second one has been mostly addressed by a more targeted police presence in Moore square.
Really wish people would stop making mountains out of molehills.
Took the words right out of my mouth. The people complaining would probably never live downtown anyway, so it’s not like they’re actually doing anything to contribute to a solution (other than complaining). I salute @Boltman for moving out to Chatham, he realized DTR wasn’t for him. I think the others that are constantly complaining about this issue would probably enjoy life in Disneyland/Chatham County as well…which happens to be far, far away from the scary vagrants in DTR.
To be fair, the perception of safety is just as important as actual safety in terms of bringing in the suburban shoppers, eaters, and drinkers that the businesses in DTR rely on.
The media frightening everyone and the sparse sidewalks don’t help that.
Replying to my own post here, but I think the bus station could definitely use a bit more color. Reposting the strong towns article as well:
Looking at this picture upsets me, because I still don’t understand why they didn’t include retail within the Moore Sq station redevelopment. That alone would’ve helped so much with the perception and foot traffic in the area, IMO. I know Charlotte isn’t the best example, but something similar to the retail spots they have in their station would’ve done wonders here.
There are more than 10 illegal firearm arrests in Glenwood South every weekend. And I can think of 2 downtown homicides right off the bat. It’s not as bad as other major cities, I agree, but I’m not as concerned about those places as I am Raleigh. I think the concerning part of all this is when you see things like “up 225%” or “444% increase” etc. That should concern people.
I’m struggling to understand your point.
Detroit is a great city btw. Love Detroit.
I’m a bit confused. You were just sent an article that said that those same increases went down, and aren’t acknowledging them. Gun violations went down 73% according to that article. Surely if great increases cause you great concern, then great decreases should cause you great relief?
A drop of 75% would require an increase of 300% to get back where it was, so it is completely comparable.
Detroit’s been making a comeback, fwiw.
I don’t see an article about gun violations going down 73%. Maybe I missed it? Help me out here
Edit: Nevermind, I see it now. Well that’s great news then, I wasn’t aware that the crack downs have worked! My apologies. I was reading thru the article about paint looking for these statistics lol
