I thought it was gonna be a concrete plaza so this is way better anyways. Set the expectations super low and then always be happily surprised ![]()
When looking at the rendering keep in mind that there is parking underneath that plaza. It might be green, but I doubt there’s going to be a bunch of trees. The design may have evolved somewhat after this was printed.
Yeah I know this rendering ended up in a presentation that was given this past Friday but I’m not sure how old it is. I’d heard that plans had to be changed some because when they were digging for the parking they essentially hit a spring so draining water has been an issue (according to someone who is supposedly in the know).
With parking underground, it’ll probably be mostly grass and any tress will likely be pretty small.
Your pictures are all very dark. Must be the permanent shadow of all the unbuilt 40 story buildings.
I’ll say this – it may not be tall, and it may be shrouded in a secrecy that seems unwarranted, but the density this creates is great. Really connects the government area and the rest of downtown nicely.
Until they demolish the brick buildings in the foreground and create another parking lot.
but but but but they said that was going to be a new park!!! (I also have my doubts)
that’s a VERY attractive building. I love that it will face the globe/earth across the street. Trees or plaza over the garage, it’ll be a nice outdoor area for the public, especially nearby museum visitors, to experience.
The globe needs to be turned into a mini digital Sphere
The view of the globe is better going east to west on Jones. I wish they would convert Jones St to two way.
Hard disagree. I like it as it is now. Making it digital will just turn it into a digital billboard like the vegas one.

It really does need a cleaning tho. That caulk is melting and brown. I noticed that recently. Also, I wish they had finished the job and made the oceans blue the original render, instead of leaving those area the uncovered silver. I suppose that ship has sailed by now ![]()
I think that is going to require a state budget. Good luck with that.
Is it just me, or it is curious that they are framing interior walls BEFORE enclosing the exterior of the building. It seems like they typically try to make the space weathertight before they get too far along with the interior of the space. Am I wrong? Then again, this is NC, the government does tend to do things backwards here…
I’ve been surprised not to see elevator shafts or stairwells yet! So many times you see elevator shafts as the very first thing to go vertical, but I can’t see them from the webcam on this project, maybe they are buried in there somewhere. Now to see wall studs going in and HVAC ductwork it is an interesting sequence of construction.
Exactly! We usually see rough-ins for HVAC and elevators and maybe electrical, bf the cladding starts to go up. But seeing all this framing work for interior partitions before any exterior cladding is up is very odd IMO. (I may recall seeing a few pieces of glass up at the base of the western wall from the last time I drove by, but I may be mis-remembering this)
There are metal stairs inside. I don’t know that they’ll have concrete stairwells. They had a hole for the elevators that I saw earlier on, but again no shaft so far. I see they’ve put more concrete over the insulation on the ground floor now. The final part of the beams structure for the atrium is going up on the other side now too. Maybe the exterior is coming soon then? Definitely an unusual progression.
