NCSU Developments

A crane peaking over the Museum of Art & Design.

It’s definitely annoying as an engineering student. If you don’t live on campus, catching the engineering bus requires a connection, which (for me in ten years ago) meant that if you missed your bus it was faster to walk to Carmichael and catch it there.

A little update 3 months later:

I guess there was a crane here, since it’s coming down. Who knew…

Edit: Apparently they were setting up a temporary crane to install HVAC stuff on the roof today.

They missed a little bit at the top there…

Thats where the :seafoam_green: will go. Or maybe just some bricks. It is NCSU, after all.

Did anyone hear about this or know any more?

TLDW: there is an app you can download, as either a pedestrian and/or a driver, which will give you alerts to potential dangers around certain intersections. The example they gave is a pedestrian may receive an alert that at the intersection they are about to cross there is a car that is likely to blow through the light / stop sign. It was unclear if the data is collected somehow by the traffic signals themselves (cameras?) or if it is just working off the data they collect from people who use the app.

Seems very limited in use right now. It only works when you have the app open. I can’t envision many people opening their app up every time you or drive around campus. And if the app is only working on data collected by those who have the app open, drivers who are going to blow through lights are the least likely people to open up a safety app before they drive lol. But maybe the data that is collected can be put toward improving safety in the area and elsewhere.

(It’s not a development exactly, but the traffic signals they are testing on are pretty much entirely around NCSU’s campus. Feel free to move if there is a better topic for this to be under).

First time commenter here so I’m sorry if I’m doing something wrong, but I remember hearing about this when they first announced it and as a current student I figured I would check it out.

I don’t remember much of anything about the safety aspects of it at all (or at least I was never given an alert), but it seemed when I first downloaded the YU2X app that the main focus was around the traffic signals. As a driver (and pedestrian) you can see when the signals are going to change, and from my experience it seemed pretty accurate. And if you’re a pedestrian, you can trigger a call to cross the crosswalk. I feel like it doesn’t add that much value on its own though. As you mentioned, I can’t envision that many people that are going to drive or walk around with the app open.

As a pedestrian, it only works at two intersections (though I vaguely remember there being a third). The only intersection I really cross is the Western/Avent Ferry intersection, and that intersection seems to be on a timer a majority of the day regardless. The boxes to automatically trigger a call via your current location aren’t that big, and I had some trouble getting my phone to show my location accurately enough to trigger it on the day that I went out to try it. You can still press a button in the app, but at that point you might as well press the physical button. I also have no idea how it gets data on approaching cars, so unless its using cameras or some other sensors, I wouldn’t trust it for safety alerts either. I’d rather keep my head out of my phone and live without knowing how long it is until I get the walk signal.

As a driver, I don’t see enough reason to have it up on my phone while I’m driving. If I’m using a navigation app like Google Maps to get around, I’m not gonna have YU2X up on the screen instead. It would be cool if the data from YU2X was integrated into these apps rather than being separate, but as of right now it isn’t. If I’m just driving around regularly, the coverage area isn’t big enough in my opinion to justify opening it. As soon as you leave the area around campus, the app serves no purpose. And if you’re driving into the area, you really shouldn’t be opening the app while you’re driving… but if you do, the app is considerably slow to launch anyways.

It’s cool technology and information to be able to disseminate like that, but the implementation through a mobile app seems limited. Maybe they’ll be able to develop it into something better in the future at least :crossed_fingers:

These renderings look awesome, but holy parking garage!

This really gives me Harvard Medical University vibes. I love this picture of Boston in 30 years.

The Village district is definitely not like Back Bay but I digress. I think NC State would be Boston University in this scenario lol. Go Terriers!

I don’t know where to put this but I saw mayor Cowell just walking around Talley Student Union today at 5:53pm I almost called her I said Cow… and refrained myself from talking. I find it amazing that she extremely low key.

I’ve seen her a few times around town. I think it’s good that she’s accessible and participates in the city as a citizen.

She should have her own security and government housing, and transportation as mayor.

She should also wear a sash with “Mayor” printed on it

Sorry, that position has been filled.
