Yup. Even more reason we need to just cap it
I keep saying the air-rights over the tracks need to be sold and developed. Until that is done that will always be a desert in DTR.
From Hillsborough to Union Station/ Boylan → 13 acres. Enough room for plenty of both development and park space. Another ~3 acres to the west of the Boylan bridge if you’re feeling real ambitious.
There’s also very relevant and recent example of this being done.
A big portion of centennial yards in Atlanta is building over the GULCH which is where all the tracks come together in Atlanta.
Hudson Yards in Manhattan comes to mind for railyard airspace development.
And, Atlantic Yards/Barclays Center in Brooklyn for the same reason…
The pretty part is the south elevation. That wouldn’t be covered up.
Yeah, I caught myself.
I’m not sure where to put this, but given I’m replying to a picture of a Nash Sq tree, I guess it’s appropriate.
Maybe somebody can grab a pic. Lost a HUGE oak in Nash Sq, seemingly to disease/storm.
Passed by earlier didn’t get a pic but part of it looked like it had been split by lightning.
Dropping trees at a pace to soon be on par with Moore Square…?
Saw the tree removal earlier and forgot to share until seeing these posts about it
Reporting today’s sleepy town news:
RIGHT hahaha. Hilarious to see all the angry outrage comments and posts (including one on the Raleigh subreddit) just automatically assuming the city is doing this out of pure spite and hatred of trees. Like… chill, y’all. The tree is literally dead.
It’s tree abortion and it must be stopped! Get outraged! It doesn’t matter that the tree died, it must remain there until mother nature deals with it.

If the rumor is true that it was struck by lightning, literally mother nature did deal with it.
This is what fences are for.
But mother nature hadn’t dealt with removing it.
@JByrne shows off his “pole cam” in this post. Time to up our photo game around here.
The photo makes him look like he is wearing knee high green socks.
and what pray tell is wrong with knee high green socks?
Thanks for sharing, @dtraleigh. I’d recommend community members checking their cameras to see if they have a cell phone controlled remote triggering feature. That makes the pole-cam way more feasible!
