Police and crime in Raleigh

More like the last 20 years. Especially the political cartoonist

Yeah, about 2500 miles west.

There are two wars going on east of downtown.

The new Mayor has put out a statement after the gun violence in the beginning days of the new year. Her letter reads in part……

“This week, the Raleigh City Council voted to fund “Raleigh Cares,” a mental health response team accessible through 911, which will launch in June of 2025.

I hope the first three weeks of 2025 are an aberration. I am committed to ensuring that the programs we are implementing will save lives and reduce violence.”

Guess we will see….

Our new police chief is a 25 year RPD veteran. I didn’t pay much attention to the selection project but I feel like this is probably a good thing. He should be very familiar with Raleigh and our challenges and strengths.

Edit: I had meant to post a link to the story. Oops!

Rico Boyce is an incredible selection for Chief and will build upon the strong foundation established by outgoing chief Patterson, including 0 vacancies upon graduation of the upcoming recruiting class.

“Someone who walks out her door on the edges of sprawl suburbia is much more likely to die at the hands of a stranger than someone moving through most American central cities or inner suburbs”

“Partly because sprawl has forced Americans to drive farther and farther in the course of every day, per capita road death rates in the U.S. hover over 40k per year” (1/3 more people than are killed by guns).

Unbelievable to read about the issues with Police holding accountable the kids terrorizing this neighborhood. I believe there was a Community meeting last night at Lions Park, but this kind of behavior and response is unacceptable.

“Police say officers spoke with the parents of the children responsible, and those parents have not been cooperative about the damage done in Lions Park.” YO this shit is pissing me off lmao

Where is “Scared Straight” when we need it???

Arrest the parents for negligence and then arrest the kids and hand them to foster care.

Are the parents not legally culpable for their shitty kids? Send them a bill, and if they don’t pay it just sue them.

There was (is) such a thing as “Street justice” - if the neighbors know which kids are doing this and therefore who their parents are… they have houses, too… just saying :eyes:

2 attorneys shot coming out the Wake County Courthouse today. Terrible. Raleigh is becoming more like Charlotte in a bad way. Not good. Suspect is under arrest and lets hope another judge or magistrate does not let this person back out.

Yeah, really awful. I thought it was construction noise at first until all the sirens.

But I’d encourage everyone to keep their shirts on about the state of crime in the city. The N&O story included a snide backhanded bit about how the police chief recently said downtown is safe… We’re talking about a very isolated incident involving an obviously disturbed person and now the peanut gallery acts like this is NYC circa 1978

A bigger city with more people in it? Correct. I’m not downplaying the shooting - just making the point that bigger cities with more people will just end up having more shootings because… there’s more people, thus raising the chances of more crime. It’s terrible when it happens, but it’s not some sign that Raleigh is suddenly turning into a crime den. Just a bigger city.

It would seem to me that there would be a lot of security at the courthouse. Silly me for presuming.

Yes and you can’t stop criminals from being criminals. I am just glad no one else was hurt and that the RPD responded quickly. If an unstable person is determined to shoot up a two attorneys on the city street, it is probably gonna happen. Gun control, more police, whatever you want to throw at it. A determined person, having a bad day, making a bad decision can’t always be stopped before something terrible happens.

I live downtown three blocks away. Is this concerning? Yes. I could have been at the wrong place and been caught in the crossfire. But that is doom that I am not going to take on. Am I worried? No. It was a targeted shooting. It could have happened in any other city courthouse in the Triangle. Or for that matter, the State of NC or the US of A.

I think the Courthouse is expecting trouble inside rather than outside. This incident may change things. Who knows. It will be interesting to see.

IMHO, I started work downtown Raleigh in 1986 and the cops didn’t allow loitering. Crime was not allowed. You can say it’s a bigger City and that is part of it but that is sad excuse to look the other way. Moore Square was renovated years ago by the City at cost of ~$11-12 million. It looked great but now it is a camp for homeless and people up to no good. When you allow it and City hall is allowing it. For what ever reason RPD is allowing it. We have been on a path down since the riots. We allowed it… When you allow it, you will have more of it!! I am older than almost everyone on here and I have worked and lived downtown. I glad I left. No regrets. I didn’t leave downtown it abandoned me and left me (no cops around until crime) so I left. I still go downtown but I am on guard so unless it changes it will continue down. Sad but true.

I felt less comfortable downtown when I went to school in 2005 than I do now. Why? Because the average ratio of non-homeless to homeless walking around was 1:1 back then on a slow day. Now it isn’t. There is a large population living there, working there, and visiting.

People have rose-tinted glasses about Moore Square. The truth is, it was bad before the renovation and returned to its former state after the renovation. This place has never reached its full potential. DURING the renovation, when nobody could use the square as a hangout, was probably the peak for the businesses adjacent to it. Sucks but that’s what people are only partially remembering.
