Prince Hall Historic District

Directly next to it will always be open because of that tower (which also makes it not exactly the best view from the inside the building), but the Acorn project hotel will block it from a bit further down the block. Acorn’s residential block also blocks most of the back.

The lack of area context in the rendering does the project no favors, it’s actually quite good.

The vast majority of the building is glass. Additionally, the blank walls are either facing the back of the property or the cell phone tower. There are reasons for that. There could be noise output from the tower, it’s not visually appealing, it adds additional insulation of heat for energy efficiency, and some people (proven or not) believe there are health concerns.

It’s a 12 story hotel on a .13 acre lot that is currently a parking lot. This is a great use of the space allotted and I’m fully in favor of the project. It also has, what appears to be, a rooftop bar in this area? That’s really really cool.

EDIT: Actually, looks like it’s 16 stories now? I thought the previous request was for 12. Either way, I’m happy with it.

I think the front/west and south sides look good. The east and the north side a lot less so, but the building would be in the middle third of the block, so the north view is unprotected and anything they put there could get covered/blocked at some point in the future, so I can see why they wouldn’t want to put a ton of windows there if someone can just build next to it. The east side it looks like they are kind of doing 50-50 and that side will have the Acorn.

I think this is one where it would look better in place than what you see here which shows a bunch of open space where there will be buildings.

Edit: does anyone know how much of the area to the north is used by the cell tower? From looking at Google maps, it seems like there is room for another similarly shaped building to the north, which would cover one of the lesser areas, but maybe that would stay open, I’m not sure.

i spot a rooftop bar :eyes:

“Rooftop deck with white curtains” the bar is on the first floor. This might be a pool.

Maybe the Marriot townplace can project some art or something onto the blank wall.

Blank walls happen in all cities.

Think it’ll be fine.

I like this. I like the pie shape balconies and angled glass walls.
I particularly like the street facade The base is scaled well and interacts nicely with the old building as shown. I score this a potential win.

I’m not sure I understand the pessimism about the project. It looks really good from my perspective. Like @pBeez mentioned, the street facade takes historic detail into account. The building is quite reminiscient of the temple next door.

The plan is to use white brick, which is also captured in the document:

This seems like a win for everyone involved. I’d love to hear what the reservations here are. It’s the first hotel going up in a long time that is actually making use of an existing adjacent parking structure and not building a 5 story parking eyesore at streetlevel.

And only 12 feet shorter than the Quorum building. This will make a noticeable impact on this side of town, bring it on!

Mimicking the street level details of the Lodge and the white design material detailing of Etsey Hall…this is certainly a project attempting to both connect with the history of its place while looking forward.

The windowless side is too much. I can’t deal with it.

It’ll be ugly from Moore Square until someone buys the cell tower and decommissions it and puts a taller building in that spot.

Will it actually be very visible from there? Between Founders Row and the Acorn hotel, there’s a lot in between on top of the distance.

This is beyond my mockup capabilities to actually tell, though.

Building is only 100’ wide. Not like it extends through the whole block or half the block. Really closer to a quarter block depth. Think it’ll blend in fairly well with the context around it.

The cell tower isn’t going to be as affective with a building blocking it in one direction.

Doubt the Moore Square view will be the issue.
There’s really not that much space here before the Acorn and its hotel fill the void…
Here’s the street view from Person along the tower lot adjacent to Acorn…

This thing probably ends up sticking out the most looking from directly behind in the midblock of Cabarrus right ?

Even then, not going to be a big deal. Certainly prettiest from its best vantage point where they’re spending all the money on windows for your view near the Lincoln at Blount but back of house isn’t going to be some huge sore thumb (like all the rest of our parking decks )…

Lastly, stealing this from the Acorn thread for the aerial - think this will fit in nicely…*if it passes COA

This seems like the worse case viewpoint from Moore Square, does this seem right (aside from being much more curvy than an actual building)?

This will definitely be an interesting looking building if it actually gets built. It’ll definitely stand out and will almost have the same effect on pedestrians as the Capital Square development.

Edit: it would be nice if the named the hotel DeLuxe Hotel or Lincoln Hotel in remembrance of the hotel that once stood in that location.

This is why I keep saying we need to keep the stabby hobos of Moore Square, to distract from the ugly buildings in the distance.

Fwiw, I like this weird looking little building. I hope it gets built like this.

Looks like a great place for a mural and/or signage for the hotel.
Imagine something in neon . . .
Great idea @trueurbanist I did not know a hotel once stud there, but a great way to make it even more unique.
It will be great to see what, if any knock on affect this and the Acron have on this corner of dtr.

There better be a damn mural on that wall, and a good one at that! Another option would be to have a living wall sort of mural, but I doubt that anyone would maintain it properly. If only that facade wrapped the north corner on Blount like it does on the other corner, it would look better. Lastly, if that blank wall was dark and carried the datum lines (3D) of the each slab to break it up and not just a blank white wall, and if that penthouse level was faux articulated completely around the perimeter, it might not stick out so badly.
