I don’t know where it is.

The hotel on Blount Street had another meeting with the Raleigh City Council last night. It really seems like the architect is doing the best he can to not only do his own job, but to revitalize the centerpiece of the Prince Hall District, being Prince Hall:

In this timestamp he talks about the a few things. He mentions what is needed to revitalize the Prince Hall building, what is needed economically for a hotel to be built in that area (120-130 rooms), as well as the effort he and his team have gone through to push this project forward (will be pursing the COA process).

So much to the point that it seemed to impress the first speaker (Jenny Harper) that was intending on speaking out against the project. The second speaker seemed to continue with his talking points and continued to show his lack of understanding of finances involved in the rehabilitation of a building.

Thanks for sharing. Who is the architect? Seems like a reasonable project to renovate the building and add a hotel on an empty lot. Win-win?

There is no amount of gentle change to Prince Hall to overcome some of its negative history for some, it seems. I’m of the opinion that change is coming regardless and while it can never and should never simply pave over the scars of the past, obstructing its evolution also solves for nothing.
This is an edge parking lot in the historic overlay that’s working to facilitate the refurbishment of a run down building while creating an economic use of a parking lot.
Will be interesting to see how the COA review of this plays out - whether height here can be deemed ‘appropriate’ within the procedural process of the code…

The amount of stupid comments that came from the second speaker were hard to keep track of.

Here was my favorite:

“It’s no coincidence since the rezoning, the Lightner house has burned down, on the other side of Shaw, 619 Blount St, that house has now burned down, what I’m thinking now is that, plenty of properties in Southeast Raleigh are going to magically start burning down so they can get redeveloped”

I should thank them for introducing such a great idea!

So they’re going to continue the public hearing on December 5th? Seems like a huge gap.

Time required to go through COA process - *only meets last Thurs of the month or something like that, might take 2 meetings to come back to council with a ‘judgement’

Is this the hotel associated with the Acorn, or is it going on the lot next to that? I am somewhat confused . . . but I do like it. A nice change of design from what is dominating these days.

Also confused, but looking at Google Maps, I think this would be just to the right of the eventual (maybe) hotel behind the Acorn apartments, in the empty lot.

Yes, that was source of my confusion. The drawing has it right next to the 3 story brick building on the corner (lets hope all this development gets it remolded and in use - no reason to replace it), and on the map it looked like that is a different lot than the Acorn/hotel lot. Interesting that if we are reading this right, there were be side by side hotels here.

I don’t think it can be replaced - isn’t it a historic landmark?

yes, renovating the masonic lodge building is part of the project. this has been on the radar for a while, here’s a map from a bit ago.

Between the original rendering and the updated on just posted, I am counting 7 floors (original) vs 16 floors (updated). Additionally, there doesn’t appear to be any visible parking structure. Plus renovating the historic building at the corner will be the cherry on top. I think this project will be a HUGE win for DRT.
