Public Art in Raleigh

They’ve made a little more progress on the metal artwork install on the Wade Ave overpass. Saw some guys working on this on the way into downtown from Wade, and this picture is from a couple hours later on our way to LBC.

Hmm. Interesting discussion.

I actually like most of the murals that have gone up downtown. They seemed to have been in places that were covering up something ugly or unused. However, now that they’ve become popular/attention-grabbing, businesses are wanting to put them on their buildings.

I really haven’t thought about this aspect of it and will need some time to really think through whether it’s ‘no-harm, no-foul’ or if it’s a slippery slope that works as a loophole around the sign ordinance.

I only say this because most of the murals to this point have been strictly art, or nature-based. However, there have been a few that have made political statements. In the ones that have made those statements, they’ve been what I’d say are statements that the majority of Raleigh would politically agree with (at least the downtown demographic). But I wonder what happens when a business decides to make a political statement on the other side, using a mural.

Anyways, initially @softfurrykitty 's comment made me shake my head and wonder why this is an area of this much frustration for him/her. But after really thinking about it, I understand the concern and can see this becoming an issue at some point down the road.

Loup,

Thank you. Honestly, it is not an area of frustration for me, it’s more of an interesting situation which I have noticed while walking around. I notice this is starting to happen with houses. In 5 points there are two houses, one has a blue line going all the way around it. It is something to do with police support, another house has BLM painted on the side. Both are large and very noticeable. Fine with me, I don’t really care but I don’t live next door either. I’m fine with both messages but does it have to painted on a house. We have these regulations and approvals for our future plans for construction over the next 20/50 years, go through the process of building nice stuff and then this petty stuff sticks out and people that just want to try and live a life have to be sent messages every time they ride by these two houses. Wonder what will be next, People are amazing and smart, someone is going to put the city in a bad spot with something painted on a house where everyone sees it and if not liked all hell will break lose. I just like to watch and talk story about it. I guess the yard signs are just too small for their passion.

DRA just posted about this mural on Instagram. It’s being called the “Mount Rapmore of the 2010’s” and similar murals could potentially be found in other cities such as LA, NYC, and Toronto (if I’m reading this correctly). Looks like it’s also interactive, for those that partake in SnapChat.

ETA: a quick search includes a blog post detailing the story behind the murals and what the others look like.

Another edit: I think Raleigh’s version is the best of the four (but I might be biased).

Pretty cool. But darn was so hoping that was Dreamville’s headliners.

I might also be biased, but I agree that Raleigh’s looks the best. :1st_place_medal: :trophy:

That is some heavyweight company to be in: NYC, LA, Toronto, and Raleigh!

(Glad we got the nod over Fayetteville)

Why not a country mural? North Carolina is home to Randy Travis, Charlie Daniels, Eric Church, Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs, Scotty McCreery (actually from Raleigh), Luke Combs, Parmalee…I mean seriously. NC’s roots in country & bluegrass…as well as blues & jazz have some pretty impressive names on them.

We do already have a John Prine mural. And the Jazz Monsters mural on Morgan Street. But sure, other country music artists would be cool too.

Get it funded, and it could happen. :art:

Apparently it’s each of their hometowns. Not surprised he didn’t want to identify with Fayetteville…

Oh god, the Raleigh mural is objectively the best and it’s not even close. Some of the others hardly even look like who they’re supposed to be!!!

Yea, this version in NY is confusing:

I’m picking up Legends of the Hidden Temple vibes:

“The theme is Mount Rapmore, like Mount Rushmore but with rap stars, pretty simple, right?”

“What, yeah, mountains, rappers, got it, no worries”
