Public Art in Raleigh

Not sure how realistic this mural is without a Ranger (probably Jacob Trouba) elbowing the Canes player in the face.

Plenty of Canes stuff downtown is good - I like the name more than the Raleigh Hurricanes, but the amount of “I always thought they were in Charlotte” from out-of-staters is grating, and the arena being out of town and screened by trees doesn’t help that.

Pretty dang cool. Tho as a Canes fan I wish they stuck strictly with the Canes red, white, and black colors. But I’ll definitely still take it, nice addition to downtown!

Lol well that’s on them for being dumb.
I did notice during the playoff games there were a number of mentions of Raleigh and being the capital city, and shots of downtown Raleigh all lit up.

Lol my group definitely cheered louder for the DTR shots than a Canes goal

Big points to the person that figures out where and gets pics posted!

Is it the concrete wall behind Gravy? :crossed_fingers:

It looks like the artist is Gabriel Eng-Goetz who did the recent Canes one on the parking deck downtown, and the one in BoxYard RTP. Definitely talented!

One common trend I’ve noticed as of late is that a lot of these rezoning cases downtown are including a condition for public art installations. I initially was like “oh wow this is so great!”. After watching the planning commission meeting yesterday, I figured out why the developers are doing this, and am now not so sure I agree that “this is so great!”

Basically, there is some policy for downtown that Parks & Natural Resources has that large developments downtown should include public amenities. This is something I’ve heard Council Member Knight talk a lot about at City Council: how private developers downtown should be including open space/amenities outside of just what the city offers downtown (I totally agree with him).

Well, Parks & Natural Resources are sticking with this policy, but an example of a public amenity they are encouraging is “public art”. Don’t get me wrong, I love all the murals and art that are going up downtown, but now I know why they are… The developers have an easy way out from incorporating any actual amenities / open space / pedestrian plazas , etc. into their developments. They just paint some blank wall with a (sometimes) nice mural. A Planning Commission member sort of pushed back on this yesterday, asking Parks staff to comment on if public art was meeting what they required for amenities, and this is what they had to say (1:45:14 - 1:48:20):

I’m all for encouraging public art, but I think this should be separate from our need for actual public amenities like pedestrian plazas, courtyards, parklets, etc. Thoughts?

Agreed, should be both, not one or the other

Saw this one today. On Capital Blvd between Brentwood and Westinghouse lights. The road noise in those apartments would make me go crazy.

Yeah I’m wondering what they’re charging for these brand new apartments per month… I’m sure they’re very nice and shiny and new inside, but … yeah, it’s gonna be a WHILE before that becomes even a non-shitty area to live in let alone actually desirable  - but hell, I’d sign a lease next month if they were ~$1k a month MAX. Personally though, I still think that’d be a lot of money to live IMMEDIATELY ON TOP OF CAPITAL BLVD

This would seem like a good location and product for short term leases for those moving to the Raleigh area. When my family moved to Raleigh decades ago, we basically had one option for rental housing while our house was being finished because nobody else would give us a 3 month lease.

A lot of people just want to go to work, have an easy commute home, have nice new appliances and amenities, and maybe Uber downtown on Saturday night to blow off steam. These do that.

Noisy for sure, but cheaper than the downtown/NH equivalents.

…and probably loaded with random Capital Blvd characters wandering around

Does Raleigh have any people that one would consider public art? It seems to me that a lot of cities have that person, or those people, who are so visual and visible as to be considered the art mascot(s) of their city.
