Raleigh Convention Center - Expansion and Larger Events

Call me old fashioned but I like Edgy. I get what they’re trying to do with the Rounded but those renderings look too much like a Nerf VCR. Curvy just looks cheap to me, like Temu FiServ Forum. Sure the Edgy model is playing safe but it’s still distinctly modern in an inoffensive way (that Downtown lacks) that I don’t worry will look tacky in 6 years or get torn down.

Tagging back for bonus hater points. The Curvy North end has pegs that correspond to big useless structural cutouts like it’s a giant Lego. I hate it so much.

I’m on team rounded.

Team rounded as well :handshake:

If they’re going curves, they need to go all out. Boxy with rounded corners is not curved.

My bet is that they go with the one that prices out the cheapest. At first glance, I am going to guess that it’s the 3rd option.

You’re old fashioned.

Also, I like my women how I like my convention centers: curvy, edgy, and well-rounded.

Sorry, I’ll see myself out…

I asked about pricing and the architect said they were all about the same.

Rounded is the most interesting addition to DTR. Santa Fe architecture vibes.

“Curvy” (which is not even remotely curvy lmao) is probably the best/most appropriate and fitting with the current Convention Center, though I’d LOVE to see a building with the “Rounded” design in Raleigh (just perhaps a stand-alone, as like others have said I don’t think it quite fits with what it’d be attached to). The “Edgey” design should never see the light of day.

EDIT: ok I’m seeing the one section of “Curvy” that is, indeed, curvy. Bit of a stretch to call the whole building that, though lol

Yeah, good design is just not expected here so we get budget designs (square boxes) but most convention centers in the US are pretty mediocre too. Nashville’s Music City Center at least tried.

We need a vote!

My vote for “Curvy” is strictly for the Convention Center extension. However, if we were voting for “Which design would you like to see next in Raleigh, in general (for any building)” - it’s “Rounded” all day, every day. I do love that.

I think the intent of the vote is for Convention Center expansion.

Being this is a very very official vote and all…

Yes I expect that whatever wins in this thread, WILL be what the City of Raleigh implements. Choose wisely, y’all…

To be fair, every convention center (and I’ve been to way too many of them) is a series of large square boxes with a fancy atrium connecting them. That’s what a convention center is.

Let’s be different ya’ll. Say not to boxy, square and ugly. There is enough of that. Go round. Go curvy. But stay away from boxy. Calling it edgy is just putting lipstick on pig.

We need to make a survey on rounded
Expansion from 1 3

Can we pass the results on to Mr Melton, and tell them this is the only community feedback the council needs on this?

This is an expensive project. If “edgy” costs less (curves are genrally expensive) then do that.

The facility is a good, useful thing. Make it clean, make it modern, but pass on the expensive whiz-bang architecture that provides zero substance.
