Raleigh Convention Center - Expansion and Larger Events

Here are the elevations shown on the seating plan…

That’s…not the best but I guess it’s not flat…

I agree. Make every seat the “best seat in the house” or don’t bother.
Speaking as a Short King :tm: - this is the reason I don’t bother with large amphitheaters most of the time. MAKE THE SLOPE BIGGER!

anyone know the current elevation chance from stage to the last row of the seats in the current amp? Guessing its only 5-6 feet at the most

Roughly 8’ according to IMAPS, which seems right, if not low. Grade is tricky to “eye-ball”. 10’ of fall across 226’ is only 4%.

Chatter on the web says that the current Raleigh Convention Center is too small for GalaxyCon to continue as is, insane crowds. If there was ever proof that the convention center needs to expand it’s last Saturday at GalaxyCon.

Idk I’d be fine being known as the Cameron Indoor of convention centers.

Yea, but other teams aren’t considering relocating to another venue all together potentially making more revenue.

I just received an email from the city about a meeting to showcase the 3 new design options for the Convention Center. Next Thursday 11/7.

I went to an early session of the Convention Center Expansion Design Options. They talked about why the expansion is needed and the programming of the new/West building. There was a good bit of talk about the shimmer wall, which is not going to be nearly as visible as it is now. There will be bridges connecting the two buildings over McDowell.

IMO the best part was near the end when they showed the three options: Curvy, Rounded, or Edgy. The three options are basically the same building with different skins/finishes. They all include what looks like it will be a nice third story outdoor terrace. Personally, I liked two of the three. At the end, they invited questions and comments about the designs.

This is all a long way off. They are hoping it will be completed in late 2028, which means it will likely be 2029.

Edited to add pics and names

Curvy

Rounded

Edgey

I appreciate that they placed the microphone roughly where the new Red Hat will be.

Are the pictures edit and rounded? No curved?

Ps I really hate #2 if only bc it reminds me of this gem

They even managed to turn the non-square version into a big box.

I don’t know which 2 of the 3 you showed but I like the bottom one. Definitely would be unique for downtown Raleigh. I’m still bummed about the shimmer wall. They should find a way to move it or something. It’s one of the very few creative, unusual things we have.

Yeah me too as are my neighbors. The one iconic art piece that Raleigh has will be totally covered up except for a few that will never actually get the full experience. It really is a loss. Not sure of a solution but a loss all the same.

Yeah these are both the better options although number 2 here is a little too modern to go with the existing building IMHO. So number 1 wins it for me. The design you didn’t show I think they called edgy maybe was way to boxy and just looked like a prison so I really hope they stay away from that one.

I imagine 1 looks like it was designed in the 90s, 2 looks like it was designed in the 00s, and 3 looks like it was designed in a cooler city in the 10s. So I assume we’ll go with 1 or 2 because who needs anything different looking.

I’d very much prefer the more modern rounded option since that is more aesthetically appealing to me personally. It would look drastically different from every other building planned to or currently exist in downtown or Raleigh in general (it’s good to stray away from the status quo).

Not sure what definition of curves they are using, but that does not look curvy to me.
