Raleigh Convention Center - Expansion and Larger Events

I can take exactly ZERO credit for any of a gondola happening, but I’ll manifest with you, @CarnifeX!

Well yeah not until it comes to fruition…

Does anyone know what fancy thing is being installed at the current convention center?

Maybe it’s for a new video wall/marquee? I remember an article from awhile ago saying that the city would be installing new LED signs/marquees in particular areas around downtown, with the convention center being one of them.

I’d be down for that. More LED signage with info on upcoming events/concerts/big games etc, please!

love the oak tree image on this new installation with coming LED signage. i wish they could move or duplicate the oak tree on the little “flappers” back by current Red Hat Amph. I know it’s not no-cost to make another one, but they’re only serving to camouflage the utility equipment back there. would just be cool to see that flapper style where it’ll be more visible once it gets mostly blocked by the expansion

it’s the curvy convention center of our dreams

Yeah not a fan of the curve. Looks silly

I assume it is a vision/lighting thing - less reflections etc.

Well I am about tired of the bland block :b_button_blood_type: Give me something cooler please.

Google AI says this when I was curious, too:
Q “why curve large outdoor electronic signs?”
A "
Some large outdoor LED advertising screens are curved to create a more immersive viewing experience, reduce glare, and provide a unique aesthetic. The curve wraps content around the viewer, making it feel more three-dimensional and engaging, while also allowing for greater clarity from multiple viewing angles. This curvature also helps screens fit better into architectural spaces, adding to the modern design of a building or public area.

Immersive and engaging viewing

  • Wider field of view: The curve increases the field of view, which can make the screen appear larger and more impactful.
  • 3D effect: Curvature enhances the perception of depth, creating a more realistic and immersive visual experience for the viewer, especially when paired with 3D content.
  • Increased engagement: Studies suggest that curved screens can lead to a 40% increase in viewer engagement because the content wraps around the audience.

Improved visual performance

  • Reduced glare: The curve directs more light toward the viewer and away from flat-screen reflections, leading to a clearer picture and reduced glare.
  • Consistent clarity: It helps minimize distortion and maintain high clarity and contrast ratios for viewers at various angles.

Enhanced design and flexibility

  • Aesthetic appeal: Curved screens offer a sleek, modern design that can enhance the architecture of a building or event space.
  • Architectural integration: They are flexible and can be tailored to fit unique shapes, like curved walls, allowing them to blend more seamlessly into their environment.

elsewhere it said it helps with aerodynamics with reduction of impact from wind, when on outdoor signs like this.

I think it’s cool… and at least for Raleigh, the huge curving electronic sign is definitely not what I would “expect” from a city that seems to always play it so “safe.”

Seeing on Reddit that the convention center is on fire - anyone else seeing this?

It is very much on fire and it doesn’t look good at all. Wow.
