Per @OakCityDylan I want to know where the water polo pool is.
Suburban subdivisions are definitely moving more toward the model of a small dense town where kids played in parks, people walked to neighborhood stores and services, and people generally had fewer cars. It’s definitely better than the old model of large lots, cul-de-sacs, fewer to no amenities, and total car dependency
Over in the 55+ section
Nice to see we’re #2, but the more interesting part of this to me is that Raleigh was only the top five for a couple of these 49 categories. I guess we’re just overall pretty decent, is that a license plate slogan?
How new about city slogan “Not the best at anything but overall pretty damn good”
or just “not bad at anything”

I like that but would make a slight change…moving here from the NE where salty language was the standard…I’ve noticed that damn is often replaced with dang here!
Guess would have to agree. Seems I have traveled outside the south to much -
You see 25th and 20th at first glance and it’s like ehh, but then you start reading through the cities…and wow that is quite the list to be a part of!
That was my thought as well! Certainly not bad to be towards the bottom among the best!
Debated which thread to drop this in - it’s a local podcast, but an outside-ish perspective. Longtime NYC Parks Commissioner and former Raleigh Chief Planning Officer Mitchell Silver on what DTR is missing:
“We don’t suck that much”!
Saw this report about city financials on the lastest strong towns podcast and Raleigh was a top 10. I have not looked into it much and they seem to be an org that is all about the national debt. But kind of interesting to see that we stacked up well either way.
We are definitely doing better than our competitor cities of Austin and Nashville.
Given that Greenville is miniature, I’ll consider this winning the big city division.
I don’t think North Carolinians have much of a sense of Greenville, SC for whatever reason… it’s the biggest MSA in South Carolina, bigger than Greensboro, Winston, Fayetteville, Asheville, or Wilmington. It’s the CBD of the most populous county in the state. It’s not ever going to be in the same league as Atlanta, Charlotte or Raleigh but it’s not exactly Mayberry.
Maybe it’s bc the municipal population is small? SC cities are not allowed to annex territory as freely as NC cities so their municipal populations are relatively smaller. Charleston is a full blown walking city and it would be the 8th biggest city in NC between Cary (7) and Wilmington (9). It’s kinda apples and oranges
Not to burst your bubble, but they also did a best city list that we didn’t even land on.
DC is number 1 !!! that’s a big turnaround from around 20-30 years ago. Guess congress is throwing a lot of money there way, and guess will get slapped around for this but the gentrification of lot’s of DC neighborhoods.
for a summer i worked in a contract pharma testing lab in rtp back in the late 90’s. i remember getting the sense then after talking to some of the incoming masters degree researchers and phd team leaders then employees there that more was coming.
