I didn’t know that was a thing. That does sound pretty cool.
Seconding this! We went to Tuck Fest a few years ago and they just had bands casually playing throughout the day/evening. It made for a really good vibe to just chill and listen to music in between other events that were ocurring.
Tuck Fest? Is that a drag queen event? ![]()
Its an outdoor competition festival: Biking, Traill, running, climbing, boating, etc. you can go to compete or just to spectate. Its a great weekend.
Where did you find these images?
Outdoor ice rinks (especially two in concept A) seem a bit overkill in a place that barely has winter and already has several year-round indoor ice rinks and seasonally-appropriate outdoor ice rinks.
If they’re dead set on an outdoor ice rink, it should be a roller rink for the other 48 weeks of the year. It could be like Le Frak Center in Prospect Park, where they make it an ice rink in winter and a roller rink the warmer months.
The Triangle has several ice rinks but only two roller rinks. Only one of the three outdoor inline rinks even has lights, so adults who work regular business hours can’t even use them in the darker months.
I think this site should have updates on the project…
The ice skating at the one in Charlotte is mid-November to mid-February so I imagine it’d be the same here.
I know this this thread doesn’t get visited much, so let me share an idea I’ve thought about for a long time. The City of Oaks needs more than just an Acorn as it’s symbol. It needs a whole tree! If the city could commission an Artist to design a Giant statue/fountain of an Oak Tree in a plaza setting, in downtown. Instant tourist attraction! The perfect spot I believe, is the the triangular parking spot formed by the merger of Edenton and Hillsborough st. It’s right next to 400H, new developments on Hillsborough, and close to Gsouth. It would be a beautiful addition to a beautiful city! Surround it with restaurants, and retail, and you’ve created a “destination” -something we Raleighites can enjoy (and brag about) If you’re familiar with the spot I’m suggesting, Imagine the concept, a beautiful, and revenue generating work of Art uniquely designed for Raleigh, that defines Raleigh.
Like the Tree of Life in Disney World Animal Kingdom?
I’m not against the idea, just hard to imagine a non-corny execution of it
I believe there’s an Artist with the right vision. Just have to find him/her. We could solicit ideas from the public. Probably get the NCMA to weigh in, Council of Arts, Chamber of Commerce. As you can see, I’m very enthusiastic about this! I think it has “legs”!
NCMA already beat you to it.
Just kidding. I really like the idea. A quick Google shows that there are tons of different tree sculptures out there. So you’re right, just need to find the right artist. Plus, you know, convince the city to invest in public art – although maybe that wouldn’t be too hard after the success of the Dix trolls.
For a long time, I thought we should have modest tree sculptures in tree bays where live trees are missing. Like near the Marriott which is super bare due to the parking deck underneath (which I still don’t understand..apartments plant trees on roofs all the time. I think the parking deck excuse is lazy). Probably something closer to looking like a real tree but chunky enough to be painted/decorated by local artists. I’m sure folks here remember the cows in NYC 25 years ago, the mermaids in Norfolk, horses in OBX, there were many cities that copied the idea from NYC. Ours could be trees and they plug all of the missing sidewalk/street side trees. Then auction them to generate money and paint more. Look into this if you don’t know about the NYC cows.
….or the Wolves in Raleigh
This only lists a handful of our wolf sculptures from the early 2000s. There are still several around the city if you know where to look.
Cool! I didn’t know Raleigh did this. I guess most cities did something. The NYC cows in 2000 were/are actually a rotating “cows on parade” exhibit. But NYC was the biggest with 500 cows. They brought back a different version in 2021.
Virginia Beach- dolphins
Any more we know about? I think these programs are pretty neat. A tree version would work here if done right.
One was covered in pennies and was stolen from where ever it was placed in the City. It showed up a while later in the lake at Pullen Park. I wish I could find a picture of the pennies shining from under the water.
I remember seeing them all over the place when I was in college, then when I moved back in 2008 there are only a few here and there. I found a book at a used bookstore that had pictures and what they were supposed to represent of all of the wolves. I’m kicking myself for not buying it.
Well, they apparently weren’t that memorable since the original Cows on Parade was in Chicago in 1999. (I had just moved there.)
I saw Rage play Bulls on Parade at Woodstock 99.
Sorry, I guess that’s not relevant.
