Didn’t we already get development plans for PNC or are you hopeful we will get something for the surrounding area?
I don’t know if those were considered “development plans” though - as they just appeared to be a “Here’s what COULD happen” and not necessarily “Here’s what we’re PLANNING on happening”
BTW, the Canes confidently took home the win last night in NJ to go up in the series 3-1 with the next game at home Thursday night, 7p.
Nashville just approved the 2.1b NFL stadium for the Titans.
And heavily favored to win it tonight - which would advance them to Round 3!
New York City FC just released some new renderings and details on their new stadium. They have been playing all over the place since they came into the MLS. The new stadium will be right near the Mets stadium and will have over ‘2,500 units of 100% affordable housing’ as part of the overall development of the area. Won’t be as big as Nashville’s new soccer-specific stadium at 30k seats but will be 25k seats.
Well they’ve pretty much only played at Yankee Stadium, but they’ve proposed numerous stadiums alllllll over the place. Guess this is the next iteration. And seems to have the least going against it so maybe this will actually happen. Bout time.
Speaking of the Canes…If they were able to win the Cup, would it move the needle for a possible MLB bid? IMO, it could help Raleigh move out Charlotte’s pro sports shadow.
Winning the cup in 06 and becoming the only professional sports team in the state to win a national championship, moved us out of their nonexistent shadow and we’ve never looked back.
True the majority of their games have been at Yankee Stadium but I remember seeing they’ve played games at the New York Red Bulls stadium, once in Connecticut, and once at the LAFC stadium all due to conflicts with the Yankees. Definitely agree that it is long overdue.
@Westend_Boys Not sure if the Canes winning again would move the needle for a hypothetical MLB team, but for sure (I hope) would move the needle towards some sort of development around PNC for the team/fans to enjoy. One of those ‘strike while the iron is hot’ moments IMO
I suspect you mean the only MAJOR professional sports team to win a national championship. Even the Charlotte Checkers have won a national championship in the AHL. Durham Bulls have also won a few.
Duke also won a title in 2015, so that is one other pro team.
It would mean both shows were a competitive sports town.
I was at the game last night. Go Canes!
It would be great if there were more buzz around the city. Are buildings lighting up in red like they have done in years past? City-supported watch parties?
I think part of it is the NHL playoffs being so long and the Canes having recent history in bowing out before halfway - fans got a little fatigued. Now that they’re in the conference finals (and likely against an 8 seed), I’d imagine that will shift.
Yeah, maybe. Even last night at the game I thought the crowd was a little more subdued than playoff games I have been to in previous years.
The Hurricanes had that long playoff drought and I think the first few years of them just making the playoffs at all everyone was really excited, but now maybe a lot of people have gotten complacent about the first couple of rounds. Hope you are right that the energy level will ramp up now that they are in the conference finals.
I’m not even a hockey guy (as in: I do not like hockey lmao) and I’m going to watch the conference finals and then the Finals after the Canes advance again
Also, I did happen to catch that game winning goal last night when I walked into PSB just moments before it happened, so I missed the beginning but just noticed today that current Buffalo Bills running back and born-and-raised Raleigh boy Nyheim Hines rang the siren to kick off last night’s game! Loved to see that!
It’s Raleigh pride, that hey an MLB team would do great here we players from alternating teams doing the baseball game first pitch, and the hurricanes storm crank. It be wonderful.
Yes, my Canadian wife gets a big laugh about me watching the 'Canes, since I’ve never been a hockey fan.
