There was nothing like that first year the Canes made the playoffs again because it was fans that endured the decade of pain just hungry to have the team back in.
I think what we’re seeing with more casual fans at these playoff games isn’t a bad thing because it means the game is growing. It took me years of going to an empty PNC to even understand the game.
Anyone remember trekking to the Coliseum in Greensboro? They had to cover the end of the arena with giant black curtains just so it didn’t look so empty. We’ve come a long way.
We definitely need a lot more Canes murals downtown since we’re the only major league sport to win a League Championship. A large Stanley Cup and 200* Canes’ team mural would suffice, if one doesn’t already exit?
Agreed. Wish we could get a high quality Canes mural too, with actual Canes colors. Rod Brind’Amour single handily has done so much for this franchise, I think a mural with him lifting the cup could be awesome.
I’ve always loved this Panthers / Luke Keuchly mural in Charlotte.
Since the biggest driving factor is money, after reading this paragraph…it’s only a matter or time.
“ In the case of the ACC, the dollars and cents speak for themselves. Per Dellenger, its members schools could make $30 million per year less than their SEC and Big Ten peers by 2026.”
Yep I think we’re 5-10 years away from the super conferences. With all the money flying around now with NIL and tv deals, it truly is all about the money. I just hope my alma mater NC State doesn’t get lost in the shuffle…
I think this is the only possible way forward. No way this league lasts another 13 years in its current form with the big names seeing money go to other conferences.
Also think that for the dissolution to happen, UNC would have to be in it to make the numbers add up. And for UNC to leave, the sweetener of “NC State has a spot in the Big 12” might make it easier to not have General Assembly interference.
I love the idea of the ACC, I grew up here so I know how much the ACC means to NC. But as soon as you added Pitt, Syracuse, etc. it felt like the soul of the conference died anyway, so I wouldn’t be too sad to see UNC leave for greener $$$ pastures.
I mean it had probably become inevitable from the moment college football was decoupled from the NCAA, and basketball never was. But mentally I only accepted the inevitable once they announced the hq was leaving Greensboro. Tag in Georgia Tech, and get the 8 to dissolve this mess.
I guess NC State to the Big 12 is the most likely outcome, but man it just seems like such a strange fit with all the schools that will be there after Texas / Oklahoma leave.
I feel like culturally VT and NC State fit there. Both prioritize football, have the ability to field decent basketball teams, and are good top 100ish universities academically.
The notoriety of the conference has gone down a little bit with Texas and Oklahoma, but I feel like a lot of the Big 12 thrives on being the “other team” in their state: OSU, ISU, KSU, even Texas Tech and UCF (Texas and Florida can have multiple “other teams”).
Also imagine a NC State basketball schedule at PNC that includes Kansas as well as rivalry games against UNC and Duke. Linking it back to the topic, seems good for Raleigh sports!
Yeah that does make sense - obviously the dream would be for NC State to slip into the SEC though. Maybe if UNC went to the Big 10, SEC would take NC State to have an entry to the NC market. As an Alabama fan, I just hope one of the two get into the SEC to get some games in the region.
