More and more over the past few years, as the Canes have cut ties with the Checkers and proven they don’t need Charlotte to survive, I wish they would’ve named the team the Raleigh Hurricanes or something similar.
Carolina Panthers makes sense, you’re basically on the border and NFL teams have greater reaches. Hockey teams are largely very regional, so give the nod to Raleigh in the name instead of trying to not offend Charlotte.
Not that I hate “Carolina” but I agree that more people would recognize the name Raleigh if you have sports teams named for the area.
As fun as it is to think that “Carolina” was chosen to not offend Charlotte. Lol. I’m pretty sure has more to do with marketing and not offending Durham since the team opted for W. Raleigh and “Triangle” anything just sounds stupid. Personally, I would have preferred Raleigh, but hey.
Milwaukee and Tampa Bay (St. Pete) have gotten their new stadium deals through. A’s more or less have as well. Pretty much takes relocation out of the picture for any other MLB teams, but should start to see some movement on expansion the next few years now. Will be interesting to watch.
It is worth noting that the Canes have offered to purchase/add a 33rd AHL franchise. AHL’s executive committee has met a couple times to consider it, and have recommended for the canes to be allowed to address the full board of governors in October.
I’m assuming this team would either be in Greensboro, or in the Raleigh area… potentially at that new indoor entertainment venue that will be on-site
San Jose put their minor league team in …San Jose. I assume it must be cheaper, since it definitely isn’t as much fun as a real minor league affiliate that a small city can embrace.
I was thinking a team in the new women’s pro league would be a good fit at a new arena to share with NC State next to the McKimmon Center. And spread the hockey love around the region, an AHL team in Durham could draw the fans from the west that might be hesitant to come to Raleigh for the Canes.
Canes AHL affiliate + NC State going D1 in hockey would be a great mix. Throw the centennial authority in charge since they’re already doing it in 1 building.
Club hockey is growing rapidly in the south, someone is going to pull the trigger like Arizona State and go D1. State seems like a prime candidate, just need the mid size stadium.
