Oh okay that was the rumor.
I have my own reservations about the hire as a UNC grad, but a couple things we can all be excited about are the investment into NIL ($20 million), and candidly just the willingness to try something different (because we’ve been mired in the basement as long as I’ve been alive, save for Mack 1.0). The college landscape today is all about your NIL war chest, UNC’s at least showing some fight now.
As a South Carolina Grad, we went through 2 older hall of Fame Coaches towards the end of their careers. Holtz And Spurrier. Both gave us a few great years, but as time went on, their drive & motivation just waned and the program slid backwards.
After looking more into it, it seems this is about more than just Bill. For instance, UNC’s NIL package has seen a significant boost, allowing them to compete with top programs in attracting recruits and transfers. Bill likely wouldn’t have taken the job without this aspect… Even if he stays only a few years, they’ll still be able to offer much more in NIL money than ever before. Anyway, I’m excited to see how it plays out.
and by offer NIL money, you mean buy players?? I only half jest, because that is basically where we are at.
It will be interesting to see how the House decision effects all of this, how colleges are going to pay players, how the TV money is going to be divided up, if that will create a de facto salary cap, etc.
At this point, I think the current system should be blown up, and rebuilt from the ground up recognizing the new realities of the money situation. The NCAA did this to themselves, they have been beyond useless for decades, and their absolute refusal to do anything but defend the 19th century definition of student-athlete lead to this insane situation we find ourselves in now.
To bring this back to Raleigh, how does State compete in all of this? Do we want the university to spend all those resources on football and basketball? Is it sustainable for either UNC-CH or State?
Rant completed for the moment, please resume your activities.
As a current Patriots and NC State fan, Robert Kraft has somehow found a way to fuck over both of my favorite teams in one single move.
Well, that is if you think Bill Belichick is going to be any good as a college coach. NFL retreads don’t have a great track record.
Big time college football at this point is nothing but a semi-pro development league for the NFL. The Football programs at the big universities need to be split off from the University as a separate legal / financial entity. They can keep the name, traditions, and loose affiliation with the University. But they need to be run like a semi-pro league with Salary caps, contracts for players and the rest.
Probably big time college basketball as well.
It’s ridiculous that the highest paid State employee in most states is the college football coach. And for schools beg fans for donations to the NIL program so they can pay the players.
The Colleges and Universities can run smaller programs for the actual student-athletes, like the lower divisions do.
This is going way off topic, but it’s my 2 Cents.
As a born and raised Bills fan and sibling of an NC State grad, UNC can go straight to hell and take Billy B with em.
Wait a minute. They’re paying him $50M over 5 years? While still paying Browns contract out, this is even dumber than I realized!
Just wait, I give it less than two years before VC money ‘buys’ controlling ownership stakes in the best athletic programs…
Dave Doeren’s got NCSU on the hook for almost $6M annually though 2029…
I don’t know. A five-year plan sounds pretty exciting at this point. As opposed to the mediocre for infinity plan.
Agreed. It will either be a complete failure (which, the program largely has been already) or complete success that results in a legitimate college football program in a state that has had no excuse to not have one up until now.
Who knows which ends up being true, but at the very least it’s brings a lot of attention to UNC football and the ACC for a few years.
The greatest coach of all time going to build a college program for the first time is, as Paul Finnebaum (an SEC purist) said, “one of the biggest stories in the history of college football.”
So we’ll see what the results are.
And he’s got 3 years to do it. Not saying he can’t get it done, but I have my doubts.
It will be interesting, if nothing else. Similar to Coach Prime in Colorado.
Their schedule is crazy soft next year. They should be favored in every game except for maybe Clemson at home. If he doesn’t succeed next year, yikes.
UNC is now the gentrified Colorado…
I’m skeptical that he’ll even make it to kickoff next season. Part of this whole story is apparently his son will be the “coach in waiting” when he leaves. Who’s to say he doesn’t take an NFL job when more of those become available after the regular season is over? I believe he’s only 13 wins away from being the all time winningest coach in the NFL & he’s not getting any younger.
Rumor is that he will soon be a resident of Chatham County. Governors Club, although he has already been provided a membership to Chapel Hill Country Club. He will probably join this forum and troll the Raleigh posters with me. Good times ahead.
