Raleigh Stadium/Arena/Sports Discussions

The Hurricanes have agreed to a five- year extension with PNC Arena which takes them through the 2029 season. Kind of kicking the can down the road. Dundon wants either a new arena or significant upgrades to PNC and the surrounding area.

Didn’t we just pay for upgrades to PNC?

Also Dundon wasted $250 Million on the failed AAF. That would have paid for about half of a new arena right there.

Dundon has already stated he wants an arena Downtown.

These things take time. A new lease was inevitable. True urban development will never happen around the current arena because N.C. State and moreover the “State” will have too much day and the latter has no desire to help Raleigh in any way.

Moving downtown will happen. You have a Mayor & Council they want it. You have a huge development planned South of downtown and that area all the way to Downtown proper have multiple options for a new arena.

Only question is whether N.C. State will come along for basketball but I have a hunch many would be fine not having NCSU as a partner because of all the nonsense you have to deal with between them and the State Government.

There is a reason the Hurricanes are “red” and it isn’t because the franchise chose that color from the beginning.

The Hurricanes are red & black, because that is what is used for the official storm warning flags with real hurricanes.

I think this was the first draft of the logo set (and colors) and very close to being selected. I think they were trying to pull some of the inspiration from the Whalers logo for continuation of the franchise but then decided for a 100% fresh start.

I thought the N&O article lays out the problem with urbanizing what was rural stadium at one time, and the clash of cultures. But they also mention the AD at State, and his willingness to explore giving up parking spots for more development.
I think the university’s flexibility comes to late this area. With the age of the arena, its probably a better investment to build new downtown.
Does anyone know the spots that are under-consideration? Are they all south of Downtown? We have discussed this hear a lot, but its been a long time since I recall discussing where it should go.

I don’t think anyone had any skin in the game to begin with. There were three main contenders:

  • the Downtown South/Penmarc property on Saunders/I-40
  • the former factories along Wilmington St., and;
  • the northeast corner of McDowell/MLK whose development status is always in limbo

…but none of them were formally accepted by the city.

People on this thread and articles cited here have also brought up someplace inside the beltline along Capital Blvd, too, if I remember right.

But before we start the echo chamber we always get into, this is a reminder that no government official, team, or pro sports league has actually made a move for any of these places yet (except for that one NCFC stint) and the vast majority of us here are only armchair “experts” who are just spitballing into the void. Please don’t take this forum too seriously; remember what happened last time…?

Mike, I don’t know you but I am having a hard time believing that. Apologies if I’m wrong … but there’s just no way.

Here’s the article. I always like the thought process behind creating logos.

I wanted to make a historical nod to the Hartford Whalers since that’s where the team came from. I like teams to have history. The fans who grow up in cities around the world should have a long-standing connection to a franchise and its history.
The logo was intended to be the primary mark for the team, since it was a new franchise. At first glance, you’ll probably see “C” and “H” for Carolina Hurricane. But if you look more closely, you’ll notice that the overall “H” form has a “W” intertwined, being formed by the vertical anchor rod in the middle.
I actually wanted it to read more like “HW” than “CH.” Deep down, I was hoping the team wouldn’t move or change its name, but could adopt a variant of the HW emblem.

I’m glad they picked the current logo. That one does not have anything todo with hurricanes.

TBJ subscription article discussing anticipated tax shortfall and impact on stadium projects.

Discussion on PNC and an expectation that ten years from now the county will be pursuing a NEW entertainment facility. Details TBD. Edit for clarity: the New stadium might be a renovated or redeveloped facility at the current site or a new facility somewhere else in the county.

Maybe I read wrong between the lines about this . When reading the city agenda for tomorrow’s council meeting , I believe that it stated recommendation to take $9 million from the PNC hotel funds in 2030 toward a future sports stadium / arena . Correct me if I am wrong about this .

Yeah - I’m sure the hospitality tax that funds these things has taken a huge hit, and will for quite some time.

What’s the TBJ article say @ downtown arena? My guess is just a repeat of what we already know which is the Council and Dundon want a downtown arena so they structured the current lease extension to set the stage for a new Downtown arena in 8-10.

I scanned it. That’s basically it. Nothing we haven’t discussed here. They’re putting money into the current facility and there’s “options” after the current lease (2030).

The authority and the Carolina Hurricanes have agreed on terms through 2030, but Dundon has termination rights. The term sheet aligns with a plan that would commit $9 million to PNC Arena through 2030, but leave open what happens after that.

“For the last 25 years there have been whispers – or higher than that – about where the arena needs to be,” Merritt says. (Jeff Merritt, executive director of the Centennial Authority)

I would just like an arena to be in a mixed-use location. Truly downtown would be cool, but I don’t know where that would be unless the prison goes away, and I do wonder if even in ten years there will be enough critical mass to support something like that in DTR without loads of parking.

Just a mixed- use development would be a big improvement over the current situation. Maybe at Downtown South. I may be in the minority, but I think the current geogaphical location is good, it is just the lack of things around it. If the state went all in on retail/resi/office like they were supposed to do originally that would still be great

Current location sucks. It has always sucked. Travel to other cities and it’s known how Raleigh made such a stupid decision when every other city in America was building their stadiums and arenas in their Downtowns…Go to Nashville and see what having arenas and stadiums downtown will add to the vibrancy on “game night”…or “concert night”…or any event night

Heard a soccer friend say how booming downtown Memphis was on a Friday night when their minor league baseball team & soccer both playing at the same time .

If they are pumping money into downtown Memphis, that’s a financial house of cards. That city and metro just treads water (population) at best, and all of Tennessee’s energy goes to Nashville.
