Raleigh Union Station and RUSbus Facility / Union West

I know you can’t see it very well, but I definitely saw two bases for two tower cranes – as someone above mentioned.

Soooooo, this isn’t going to be a Highwoods parking lot??
I guess I lost that bet. Thank GOD!

No, of course not. A Highwoods parking deck!  :joy:

I mean I’m disappointed with how this is turning out too. But I guess since I had kind of written it off when everything downtown seemed rosy still, I’m actually kind of happy it’s moving forward as many things are cancelled or on hold. At least something else to watch after Capital Square finishes up.

My main concern is that we don’t get that apartment tower. The project winds up being a bus depot and parking deck. Just like the other one.

Now that definitely would be the worst case scenario

This looks like two towers going up to me. I don’t think a parking deck needs a dedicated tower crane. :man_shrugging:

Yep is for two tower I am with on that one

…let alone two! I do believe the apartments will still be built (that they don’t just seems impossible at this point with the amount of Federal funding involved), but I am curious to see just how tall they end up… I’ve accepted that it won’t be much taller than The Dillon, but any noticeable height variation here would be welcome.

Unless I am mistaken, the apartment tower is a private investment and receives no public funding. The federal funding applies to the bus facility only. I still think that it will be built.

I was under the impression that federal funding was in part due to the bus depot, but also due to the inclusion of “affordable housing” ? Someone please correct me if I’m mis-remembering.

Yes 10 percent will be affordable housing units

I’m thinking the same. If we use the construction of the Dillon next door for reference, the full site is slightly smaller than the Dillon and it only needed 1 crane. The boom arm would be long enough to construct both the tower and the deck. Unless there is some railroad regulation not allowing the crane arm to pass over the tracks, if that was the case one of the crane bases wouldn’t be located that close to the tracks.

Hoffman may be getting some local money for the private part, but not federal support.

I think this is a real thing. I worked on a project in Greensboro where lift plans had to be submitted to the railroad for approval.

Judging by the 2 crane bases and the signs installed on the construction fencing, the apartments are being built now too.
