The pedestals have been present for weeks, if you’ve been paying attention you would have seen these coming. Makes sense with the bus terminal and future tunnel. I’m happy about the pedestrian improvements with walk signals going in too. It’s a win
I’m just happy that the brick corners haven’t been “accidentally” demolished during the construction!
As for stopping cars at this intersection, I’m totally okay with it.
Bus priority signaling is definitely part of it, but also, buses need to be able to make turns in this area. To facilitate that, stop bars will need to be set way back from the intersection so that buses have room to turn, like at the Martin and Blount intersection. This creates inadequate sight triangles at these intersections since the buildings are so close to the corners, and triggers a need for signalization so that cars and buses can enter the intersection safely without the need to see cross traffic.
What are they taking for ever?
I think traffic signals are planned on West St at both Hargett and Martin. That would complete the signalization of West Street. Totally understand the need given that there will (supposedly) be buses running here before too long.
This leaves four intersections on Harrington (Edenton, Hargett, Martin, Davie) as the only remaining non-signalized intersections in the core downtown grid*.
Every time I try to cross Edenton I curse the lack of a signal there, but I can’t really say I miss it in the warehouse district.
*I don’t count the area east of the Halifax mall as the core downtown grid.
So…whatever happened to the tower portion of the project. Just the bus station that is being built now. Note: this pic i took many months ago, I think early this year.
What’s most bizarre is they installed two crane bases at the site. So it seems they intended to build, but then decided to stop.
They have yet to submit for the building permits for the tower.
It’s truly baffling. The Bait-n-Switch of the Century for us.
Maybe they will go back their original 34(?) story resi tower with the 12 story adjacent hotel… I know I’m dreaming, but let’s keep the positive vibes today.
It’s going to get built. It’s delayed. That happens. You really think the city is going to let this go unfinished? Given all the entities involved and the significance of the project itself? It doesn’t make sense, so it will get built. 400 H is basically fully leased, and the apartments on the edges of DTR aren’t. This apartment will also rent quickly because of its location, so it’s not even high risk. Relax and let the process play out.
Great calming force in a sea of grumpy
They did put in the foundation for the tower, but unfortunately it is for the 23 story one.
We could still build much higher than the foundation reasonably allows for. We get a tall building and an iconic tourist attraction at the same time! That’s called synergy.
Maybe this has been scaled down more, and it will just be a 2 story brick warehouse…
(Actually cool to see the progress, especially from this angle. Nice shot!)
Yes, it is good to see some progress! At this point we still don’t really know what the finished product is going to look like, do we? There has been some many drawings, renditions thrown around for this project. I know I’ve lost track.
I received an update on the private development of this project several months ago (maybe 6-8). At that time, they were exploring options to request a change to the affordable housing conditions mandated by the 2019 rezoning (approved by the 2017-2019 City Council). The current conditions were creating significant burdens to financing construction and they were likely going to request a fee in lieu instead. I am not sure if they submitted the rezoning application to revise this condition yet. However, there was no concern about delay because they can’t start until the public portion is done (as you can see, they have a while). I also encouraged them to explore returning to an option that included a hotel portion (as initially proposed). And they seemed open to that idea. Whatever is built, I’m certain it’ll be a great addition. It’s Hoffman and their Seaboard projects that are wrapping up are fantastic.
That would really be very welcome.
The neighborhood meeting for that text change rezoning was held last night.
