The expanded capacity and/or additional terminal can’t come early enough
Air fares are up all over. Try this one, I use to fly from RDU to PVG (shanghai) for, depending on time of year, on United for $900 to $1200 round-trip and 16hr travel time total. Last I check best was $16,000 and with layovers was 2 1/2 days. !!! Something about not being allowed to fly direct from USA to China so had stopovers in Japan or Korea.
Hearing Avelo is actually making a route announcement tomorrow. MHT is apparently going to be an add (adding a new state to RDU!). Also potential in routes like MEM, MKE, BHM.
@pBeez and I would make sure BHM was a success if it came to fruition.
ha, I thought of you immediately when I read that @Daniel. I did the drive up this last weekend, flying would’ve been such a better use of my time.
For those like me who dont know airports:
MHT = Manchester-Boston Regional Airport - Manchester, NH
MEM = Memphis International Airport - Memphis, TN
MKE = Milwaukie Mitchell International Airport - Milwaukie, WI
BHM = Burmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport - Birmingham, AL
Oh boy, a direct route to Oregon?
Oops… I use Milwaukee tools all the time, you’d think I know how to spell it haha
Avelo will expand their RDU network with 3 new non-Florida routes:
Memphis (TN), Rochester (NY), Manchester (NH, 90 minutes from Boston)
Shame RDU wasn’t awarded the FAA grant they applied for the expansion.
Mexico City would be an obvious one to add IMO
Yes, and RDU is trying but MEX is literally at capacity right now and they cannot add routes without cutting and it’s just not worth it right now
MEM but no BHM? My day is ruined.
Delta said in a recent investment bank presentation that “point-to-point options may exist from certain top 50 cities, such as Raleigh-Durham”
More direct options from SLC would be nice, the red-eye home that connects through ATL is brutal.
I saw this TBJ article recently on RDU’s Terminal Two hypothetical expansion/wishlist. Looks like they weren’t recently approved for federal funding but can reapply for the funding next year. These interesting tidbits popped out for me.
Technically, Terminal 2 currently has 36 gates – but the larger planes landing on the tarmac means it typically tops out at around 30 planes.
Bill Sandifer, RDU’s chief development officer, said last month the goal is to expand Terminal 2 from 36 gates to more than 50 gates. An expansion of Terminal 2 caps at 53 gates due to its geography. Airport CEO Michael Landguth said recently that the airport is already thinking past Terminal 2 – perhaps to a “multibillion” Terminal 3 in the future.
Looks like no Avelo announcement today. I think it was leaked a bit prematurely.
According to RDU & TBJ, RDU is estimating 14.7M passengers this year, an increase from the 14.2M passengers carried in 2019, RDU’s peak year. The airport has stated the airport can accommodate 16.5M passengers, but is now expected to surpass that by 2026. Knowing how T2 is landlocked, RDU has noted T1 expansion options and has also stated that they have begun exploring the possibility of a “multibillion” terminal 3 in the future.
RDU also mentioned a few months ago they see the potential for RDU to become an international hub within the coming decades, possibly carrying 30M passengers by 2040.
Thought it was worth noting that at the canes game today, I noticed some Delta ads around PNC arena. This is the first time I’ve seen this at PNC, so HOPEFULLY this means they will be re-investing at RDU
