Red Hat Amphitheater and Outdoor Music

They should do a study

It’s never just 3 months, we all know this

We’re already looking at no concerts in DTR in 2025 if a new Red Hat Amphitheater is being constructed. IMO, if there’s a delay in approving this, and then Live Nation is forced to look elsewhere in NC for concerts for shows that would’ve been at Red Hat past 2025 (not to mention with a new council being elected), then we’re never getting another concert venue downtown.

Doing additional studies in considering other sites may be the most prudent thing to do, but I think we’re past that point. Just need to lock Red Hat 2.0 into downtown ASAP to avoid the worst outcome scenario of losing it altogether.

Yeah if we actually had a competent city government (like, the fact that a city of ~500,000 and growing still pays its City Council $20k/year salaries like it’s a part-time job shows us exactly how far behind our city gov’t is compared with its growth and needs) - they’d have decided on this f***ing YEARS ago and they’d have already started work on building out the permanent Amphitheater this year while this season finishes at the current one, so they could then open the brand new venue next season and not miss a single year of economically impactful shows. It’s not like they haven’t known the current Red Hat was temporary SINCE ITS INCEPTION.

here’s a bit of good news for DTR and music lovers

When will the amphitheater move?

  • Groundbreaking for the new amphitheater is anticipated to occur during the 1st quarter of 2025. The current amphitheater will operate through the end of the 2025 season and the new amphitheater is anticipated to open in time for the start of the 2026 season. This timing will ensure that no part of any concert season is disrupted.

That seems lightning fast but I guess there is not a lot of structures to actually build

Well OK then, my last comment can be disregarded.

We’ve known forever that they are keeping the old one open until the new one is ready. Part of the reason this has to happen now is to keep the convention center expansion timeline on track.

Don’t understand who thinks this city is so poorly run. The rankings and data and outside perception support the exact opposite. It doesn’t add up and I hate to think how depressed some folks here would be if they lived anywhere but here. Nowhere is perfect but we have it the best.

The event on south st. was a great display of transparency by the city. Anyone who went walked away understanding exactly what was happening and why voting yes is a no brainer. Not surprised to see other council members coming around now.

And this is A BIG BINGO.

And this is Truth to power. Bingo.

however, my point still stands that City Councilmembers being paid ~20k/year is extremely outdated, and these positions no longer can be viewed as part-time jobs. They upped the terms to 4 years - good move. Now up the salaries.

They should just put It there at the southern position Ima email the council members because they’re being like you said lazy and there more space.

I think this is being considered given that Mary Black mentioned this exact point a couple of months ago.

This week’s Raleigh Magazine Podcast did a feature on this issue. They pretty much agree with most folks on here. If this does not get approved, RHA is gone for good, to the detriment to DTR.

In the podcast, they mentioned that South Street has been planned to have been closed for a long time. I thought that as well, and remember hearing that the moving of this would require the closure of South Street.

Which makes articles like this all the more infuriating:

Their failure to pay attention shouldn’t consitute us completely changing the plans. This has been in the works for a while now, and if the self-proclaimed ‘Neighborhood Watchdog’ wasn’t paying attention, then they should take blame.

YES YES AND YES. I heard about this at least a year ago.

Well the plan until recently this summer was to close Lenoir (also a bad idea). But this would have been better if they had contained the amphitheater to that block and also left Lenoir open and skybridged the convention center overtop if they needed the connection.

But didn’t you hear from the experts on this forum about the street grid being gentrified?

Please let the council see through this noise, but I have doubts. The New Bern area plan was just kicked down the road, so who knows the future of that as well.

I just hope council doesn’t read crap like that and blindly think that’s a majority. It’s a blind minority (NIMBY to be clear) that doesn’t pay attention and writes a blog to push a false narrative.
