Traffic plus buses have significantly picked up on Lenoir Street. Still not bad overall, however. Traffic onto South is still flowing for that block from Dawson to S. Saunders so Lenoir didn’t take 100 percent of the traffic.

You know if Red Hat 3.0 materializes in another 15-20 years, they may be able to reopen South Street… What we build today isn’t forever, just as most of what was built in the past isn’t forever. Color me happy to see Red Hat 2.0 is finally underway.

Can confirm. Definitely closed. Having to spend 30 extra seconds sitting in my air conditioned car lost song to music while driving 1 block over was excruciating. How are people supposed to live like this?? :sob::rofl:

Oh the pain. I can only imagine. A few more seconds and you would have missed BBQ at Sam Jones before rush hour.

I apologize if I’m not fully up to speed here, but has there been any discussion around the future of the oak tree shimmer wall on the backside of the current convention center, once the expansion occurs? In my opinion, this is one of the best art installations in the area, and as evidenced by some of the pictures shared in this thread, it benefits from being highly visible from the current Red Hat location.

It will be visible from the street but not so much from other spots like now. I don’t love it but it is what it is.

From all the various comments and open meetings I have attended, it would seem that the shimmer wall will be visible from the convention center proper but not from the street as it is currently. Right now, and going forward, it serves to hide HVAC equipment. It is not feasible to move the wall. Everyone is bummed. There may be some ongoing discussions?? But unless something happens to change the design or whatnot, the shimmer wall will only be seen when visiting the convention center.

I understand, but that is a real shame. Guess everyone needs to get their pics before it “disappears.”
Is there a place to get a good photo of people with it in the background? Selfie or otherwise?

Not sure how things like this come together, but sure would be great if they could replicate or do another big art installation on the east side of the expansion since that is such a impactful view shed not only from (new) Red Hat, but also as you apparoach the city from all points south (especially McDowell).

It is. I agree. If you go to Red Hat this season you can probably get a good photo from inside.

My idea for the South elevation… wouldn’t even be that hard if they designed it as a unitized curtain wall.

I think that it’s important to realize that the Shimmer Wall isn’t just a work of public art, but also a screen for mechanical equipment.

BTW, unsurprising but the timeline for the new amp has slid some. The expectation is that the current venue will stay open for RINK this winter, through the 2026 show season but will be torn down following the last show of 2026. The new venue will open in time for the start of the 2027 show season. RINK may not have a home for winter 2026, but TBD on what RCC will do potentially hosting elsewhere.

I think if you scroll up in this topic, you’ll find my skepticism about the originally promised date. This is no surprise to me!

But but but… I thought… nevermind.
