Renovation at Historic Ideal Cleaning Co. & Lumsden Bros. Building

Blech. I was hoping for SOME retail to continue this Hargett St “retail corridor” of sorts. Nexus should at least add a bunch of it next door, and it’s good to have healthcare options for downtown residents… Just sucks we lost a (huge) retailer with nothing cool to replace it. Not to say we “lost” Father and Son, but they are in a much smaller space (went from 3 floors to 1) and therefore carry much less inventory. We definitely don’t have anything like what F&S used to be (an entire multi-level building dedicated to multiple vendors making up one huge, unique retailer). I do still appreciate what they’ve done with the West St space, it is still unique and super cool.

I think having an urgent care facility is a nice addition to downtown. (I know there is one technically on Wilmington but it looks like something Dr Nick would run)

Like I said, I definitely think it’s a worthy - and useful - addition to downtown services. I’m really just lamenting the loss of what was easily our most unique retail shop. I have zero confidence we’ll ever get anything quite like the old Father and Son again.

I have an unpopular opinion series going on FB. One of those opinions is that Greensboro is cooler than Raleigh. Obviously nobody agrees with me. However, part of my basis for that is the intersection of Walker and Elam, a full on neighborhood scale commercial area with bars, restaurants, a grocery store, a coffee shop and a cool and affordable vintage store. Lindley Park Vintage is only about the size of the current F&S space but chocked full of stuff. I’ve made two trips from Raleigh there to pick up stuff. I usually make a day of it and get dinner and and walk around a bunch too. When I miss the old F&S I drive to Greensboro and get my fix.
Anyway, Hargett St is plugging along nicely with Weaver St a big feather, but I agree, losing the Lumsden Boone space is an unfortunate hole in the retail buildup along here…one of the only streets downtown that currently can and is supporting something that resembles retail density.

Also, Martin Street is coming along slowly with retail. Flourish moving there is a big boost. We used to live in the Devon and Flourish has quite a following. So that along with Raleigh Denim, Urban Outfitters, and several art galleries is just starting to bud as a little retail corridor.

The glass railings are mostly up now…

I’m sorry but to me that building just looks weird.

It does look unusual, different…but that’s Raleigh!

I really like the way this has turned out!

Given the mid-century bones of the building to its west, it would seem that a similar renovation/extension of it as well would be a compelling idea.

And, you know… That whole huge Nexus project behind it won’t hurt either

Isn’t that building to the west where the Nexus hotel is going to be? Or is the hotel located farther down the block?

Directly to the west will be “The Nash” condos. The hotel will be on the other corner of the block (southwest).

Aha! I had the layout mixed up in my head. Will be really happy when demo starts and cranes go up.

I LOVE that they kept the octopus graffiti. I approve of this reno.

Isn’t all of the the Nexus development sitting to the south of the strip of buildings on Hargett?

Yeah that building to the right of this reno is not going anywhere, or at least not due to the Nexus development. The only thing the Nexus will touch on Hargett St is a parking entrance between the aforementioned 1story^^^ and the Professional Building.

The condo building (The Nash) looks to be midway between Martin and Hargett facing Nash Sq so not next to this prosperity but the closest. Perhaps I answered the question incorrectly. :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

& wasn’t there an entrance to the Nexus parking deck on Hargett?
