I didn’t realize they are redeveloping their entire campus. I knew it was a large portion but not the entire campus. I really hope they don’t get screwed over by developers.

There leasing they have control.

Control of what? All they have is a land lease

Shaw Campus rezoning case passes the Planning Commission review.

However some really bad NO FUN ALLOWED conditions:

Now I think it’s up to the City Council to approve the rezoning and you know the Mini City Council of No will delay this rezoning case in for as long as possible but maybe we will be surprised.

I wonder if the requestor being an HBCU will help assuage some of the classic equity/gentrification concerns. I certainly hope so.

Bit of a shame about the conditions, but they’re right next to Fayetteville St. and Moore Square, so no big deal.

We should pull together funds and open a dayclub. If it passes CC of course…

Tavern is certainly up to interpretation.

Megan Patton is likely to approve it. Why did they restrict Nightclubs, its a college.

Oh it’s not helping haha. There are a lot of Shaw alumni and residents of the Prince Hall Historical District pushing back against this. I’ve never seen so much time given for public comment on a rezoning case at the planning commission before.

They can’t really do that anymore. Shaw University is no longer part of the Prince Hall Historical District.

Shaw had about 1800 students in 2016. In 2021 they had about 1000. They likely have significant financial hurdles due to COVID and their most lucrative asset is the land that they own. Saint Augustines is dealing with accreditation probation due to their financial issues and Shaw is trying to prevent that same situation from happening

Shaw owns seven parcels that are located within the Prince Hall Historic District; their rezoning application seeks to be removed from it.

I can’t speak to their larger “financial hurdles,” but thanks to the CARES Act, their $22M of debt was fully forgiven. I can’t imagine they’ve ever been in a stronger place financially than they are right now.

Slight mistake on my part. They own 2.71 acres in Prince Hall and 23.75 acres not in Prince Hall.

Shaw University will fail to exist in 3-5 years. Mark my words.

…what’s that have to do with the part of the land use map verbiage you quoted?

They may not…highly likely they may not exist………BUT it has NOTHING to do with allowing parts of the property to be developed.

I’m really not sure what Light Manufacturing ever did to deserve this kind of disrespect.

“There’s a good chance that I may have committed some, um, light … manufacturing.”

Today’s meetings appear set to be pretty epic…
